Larry Austin is an experimental American composer of mostly electro-acoustic & computer music. This is his first LP on the very scarce Irida label (founded by Jerry Hunt in 1979). From the liner notes Austin writes, “Hybrid Music describes more an attitude about than a form of music, a feeling about the materials that new music systems can yield than an unreasoning faith in the power of new musical technology. Hybrid music derives its meaning from the combination of music systems’ materials, their integration and synthesis often creating new musics. The term is coined, but the technique is familiar: the precursors of hybrid music are instrumental theatre, live-electronic music, text-sound composition, musique concrete, speech-synthesis music, jazz, opera … on and on.” The four compostions are “Quadrants: Event/Complex No. 1, “Second Fantasy on Ives’ Universe Symphony – The Heavens”, “Catalogo Voce” & “Maroon Bells”. Fascinating!
Record is in NM+ condition (appears unplayed) and beautiful handmade jacket is NM. This very scarce LP is the first copy I have offered or seen in 25 years of collecting & selling classical LPs. The Irida label was short lived & produced only a handful of recordings. Rarely offered on eBay & impossible to find. Don’t miss it!
