Label/Format: Marmalade – classic original format of one of my favourite label designs ever.

Label Conditions: Both look stunning with a deep centre ridge and as clean and fresh as new. Spindle marks are very light, fine and faint and barely even show. Another outstanding record, and in mono too, this is a beauty.

Speed / Mode: 33.3 rpm. / Mono.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. A heavy weight for this record.

Rarity: Scarce and much harder to find in mono in such lovely condition. We all know the potential use and abuse these lovely single-channel mode records were subjected too and fewer remain looking clean and playing to the highest levels. The ultimate test of any mono record is to play it on a high-end stereo turntable – so few pass this stringent test – that’s exactly why I do it as standard.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Jazz keyboardist Auger teamed up with Julie (Jools) Driscoll to make one of the most inspired albums of the swinging sixties. Issued in 1967 - the summer of love - Open encaptures the sound of those times perfectly and for me is even better than the more acclaimed Streetnoise that came later. Miss Driscoll, for many was the face of that period. Live, she commanded the stage and her audience adored her. After watching a DVD of this band live on stage, I too was totally captivated by her stage presence. A lady who gave her all and left the audience spellbound. ‘Open’ brilliantly uses Auger’s considerable keyboard skills blended with scintillating horns, this has the perfect 60s sound and captures the mood of that time perfectly with Driscoll’s vocals sublime thoughout. Side one is mainly instrumental, starting bizarrely with a saw-cutting sound before the music kicks in with great effect. Between tracks have strange sound effects, I will not elaborate, I will let the winning bidder discover all. Driscoll’s talents are far more apparent on the more vocal side two climaxing with a fantastic long version of Donovan’s ‘Season of the Witch’. Elements of psych-pop, rock, jazz and folk intermingle to perfection and this truly unique sound and album are a delight from beginning to end. A very difficult album to find in mono that plays perfectly, the music is complex and loudly mixed, but this little played copy excels and will remind those around at the time, what a once new copy once sounded like. This is a quality and heavyweight pressing and the sound is fantastic and plays with nothing unwanted. This is almost too wonderful for words and has becoming one of my personal favourite albums of this golden era.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single, unlaminated matt-finished cover made with flimsy thin card. Hence, rarely seen in high-grading conditions, most rife with rubbing, ringwear and substantial creasing. Also highly prone to grubbiness and sticker tears – all considered this slightly below Excellent example is not to be dismissed as it will prove hard to find much better. It was printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Cover Front: Retaining rich vibrant colour and lacking the usual ringwear that’s almost expected from this cover. There is just the merest hint only but look very hard. A tiny surface pull, possibly from a price sticker is seen near the top edge, but this I emphasise tiny and it may just show on my picture. A few light surface creases show little and any rubbing is largely confined to the very edges, bottom right the most noticeable, but still only small. A very difficult front looking very nice, the thick heavy record inside is never a good friend to such flimsy covers.

Cover Back: The back is not dissimilar: a little light rubbing near the top and bottom edges but in context of this cover, it really is only very light. There are minimal traces of ringwear, barely any infact and this is highly unusual. Also few creases, a small thumb type on the opening edge and a few hairline types onces on the sides that show little. Even with a few blemishes and very mild wear traces, this is probably the best UK version of this cover I have seen for some considerable time.

Top Edge: Light to light+ patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edge: Moderately rubbed, being the resting edge, this one rarely will escape.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and remarkably, no feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. As stated above, there is a small thumb creased on the back. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid but quite thin, reasonably straight with a little patchy mild compression. The text is largely unworn with any clipping to any characters very tiny and few.

Corners: The corners remain quite neat with fine shape retained, the rubbing is as per their respective edge.

Cover Summary: This has always been a challenging cover due to the thin card, non-protection, bright rich colour and usually a thick record inside. All the ingredients for well-worn and tired looking covers, this has survived well and remains overall, attractive. Not for the highly discerning I suppose, but most collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: This includes it’s original Polydor-style lined inner that is date coded 098, so clearly an early pressing. Both windows are ultra crisp and undamaged and the lining solid and clear. All edges secure with minimal creasing. Lightly aged with some darkening and glue browning on the edges, but at 43-years-old, I think it’s earned the right.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT (or very close too). A lovely visual copy that has only very surface light marks and only a modest few. When I see the state of many mono records, it puts a copy like this into context. This is very clean with a very fine shine, intense black and a heavy top quality pressing. Although it has a few light surface marks, most-all small and minor, this has avoided the perils of old mono record players that left deep furrow scratches and often craters from rm drops, we have all seen them. Even more importantly, the invisible dangers of groovewear and distortion, only a thorough play-grade reveals if this is present and delighted to state, NOT on this one. The sounds embedded in the deep, wide grooves is breathtaking. Few of these avoided abuse from vintage equipment of the day and still sound magnificent on modern high fidelity equipment used now. Visually a highly impressive Marmalade record and one I enjoyed to absolute maximum.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely Marmalade classic plays even above it’s strong visual grading with practically nothing to fault. All frequencies are sharp and clear and sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound for the complex arrangements. A fantastic production that simply brings the 60s sound memories flooding back, few albums of this type capture that mood better, this truly is a classic pop-psych gem. Any surface sounds are minimal to none, this plays cleanly, quiet and with precise sound with no clipping, high-frequency echo or distortions. Both channels are clean and sharp with no mono noises – often when played on stereo equipment, noise can emit from one channel or the other, but not this one. Nothing spoilt my sheer joy when play-grading this 60s classic, for those yet to discover ‘The Trinity’, there are few better places to start – I love this album, it has an addictive quality. This copy will not be beaten easily for beautiful sound and it’s a record I can highly recommend.

End Piece: Auger and Driscoll made magic music and their albums are greatly cherished by 60s collectors. Never appearing often and seldom in top playing conditions – were records of this type ever really designed to last so long? – well probably not if played too much on unsympathetic equipment. This one has simply not been played much at all hence it can now be enjoyed on a modern lightweight deck with the full sound potential realised – this will last another 50 years if treated the same with such low modern-day tracking weights. Few records this great age will avoid a few light surface marks at best, and most-all will show far more than this gem has. Both Marmalade labels are gorgeous and this album is ‘Sweet and Delicious’ too.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). The record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
