Label/Format: Dawn – first lilac label with matt, smooth surfaces. If my scans look a little strange, it is because this first issue Dawn record is a red translucent. That means light will pass through the vinyl when held to a bright light source as seen in my picture. This then can be seen with a red eerie glow affect, viewed normally, the record still appears black. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces tiny, very few and faint. This elusive Dawn album has clearly hardly been played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 148 grams. A very solid weight for this first issue record.

Rarity: Initially issued in 1972 with a real denin cover, within a year reissued in a totally different, more standard cover. Both are scarce as this was not a big selling album.

Brief Info: The fourth Atomic Rooster album with a style drifting more away from their progressive rock roots. So-much-so, John Du Cann and Paul Hammond left to form Hard Stuff and recorded two albums on Deep Purple’s Purple label. Like many albums on the collectable Dawn label, this did not sell well, and those with the real denin cover are very elusive. Certainly rarer than their previous albums, the change of style was not met favourably by all fans, but this is really a good record in its own right and new vocalist Farlowe is in great form throughout. A famous gimmick cover and to date, it is the very first one I have ever had. Again, worthy of note, this very early copy has the red translucent vinyl, the effect seen clearly on my picture and explained further up.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(++): this purely a subjective opinion on a real piece of denin. It includes the identification patch that has a small mark, that apart, very fine. Inside is a plain white card sleeve to hold the record, this has NO inserts.

The Denin Cover: I have had no others to compare this with, so I will just do my best to describe what is in front of me. This real denin cover includes the ATOMIC ROOSTER ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’, ‘DNLS 3038’ patch on the back near the top right corner as seen in close-up. The denin is possibly faded looking more like a pair of stonewash jeans. Edges are folded inwards from being stored inside a protective cover. All stitching sound and intact but a little fraying on a couple of edges, again like jean ends – I am not sure if this is intentional or not. So possibly a little aged, but still neat and quite attractive. Again, my grading is probably being quite conservative.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better, with any surface marks few, very fine and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light. A very fine visual copy that is clean, shiny and quite heavily pressed, some mauve label Dawn records were pressed very thinly with variable sound. A rarer red translucent pressing as again, explained further up, these early pressings are the most prized and are quite rare. Seen in normal conditions, the record appears like a standard black pressing. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare early-pressed Dawn record plays up to it’s clean visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Dawn pressings are often known to be noisy, but this one plays well with any surface sound very light and infrequent, just enough to occasionally politely remind it is a vintage record being played, and not a squeaky clean digital version. Few copies will outperform this 1972 pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this scarce later Atomic Rooster record – being on this label, I almost expect a little surface sound, so overall, I was well-pleased with this, especially as it has no pressing noises or distortions. This significantly rarer denin cover and translucent copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
