Label/Format: Pegasus – with matt finish and heavy rough textured surfaces with deep inner ring ridge. Most seen are smooth finished and this is a massive heavyweight pressing like the early Island albums, but this has EMI ‘U’ matrixes. (Please see my label scans).

Label Condition: Both in beautiful condition, truly gorgeous labels made all the more significant with this particular rough finish. I feel sure this is only one of these I have seen like this, and for ultimate good measure, the record plays nigh-on perfectly and includes a superb cover. Two ultra clean and fresh labels with any spindle marks being tiny, fine and faint, hardly any in fact. Historically, an important album as well, being the first on the new Pegasus label, try finding this massively pressed record better.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 185 grams. Yes true, this can almost be described as a ‘freak’ pressing, and one of the heaviest standard first issue records I have ever held. The last example of this record I sold around four years ago, with the more standard smooth Pegasus labels, weighed-in at 135 grams – this a massive 50 grams heavier! An ultimate copy of this prog classic with sound to match. I consider any record over 160 grams to be a heavyweight, this one goes into super-heavyweight territory and my belt-driven LP12 took an extra couple of seconds to get up to speed on play-grade. It may be a freak pressing – but a beautiful freak for sure.

Rarity: Scarce: and rarer with the first textured labels, and how many will ever be pressed anything like this massive weight? Finding a copy little played and sounding terrific equally hard, and the cover is very impressive as well, that also a challenge.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Formed in 1969 as the rise in British progressive rock was getting into top gear, the original three members were: Vincent Crane (formerly Crazy World of Arthur Brown – keyboards), Nick Graham (bass) and Carl Palmer (formerly Crazy World of Arthur Brown – drums). This is the band’s third album, it blends progressive rock with heavy metal elements, this again is a very fine album, arguably their best – all the first three are worth checking out, they should appeal to fans of Black Sabbath, Kingdom Come and Black Widow et al. It sold quite well on the success of the hit single ‘The Devil’s Answer’ that was not included on the UK version of the album. This copy is a beauty for looks and sound, and one of the heaviest pressed records I have ever held as a standard first issue.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and very tempted to grade Mint(-), this is truly an outstanding example. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Artwork drawn by Roger Dean. Printed and made by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: Stunning, and little short of as made and connoisseur standard. This too for a wear-prone cover that is seldom seen even a decent very good. Ultra clean, fresh and attractive, totally unaged as as good as they ever get. Blemishes? – well the odd super-fine edge hairline or faint tip semi-crease, but you could have a very long wait to ever find this better. The lack of sticker marks and it’s deep colour retention are massive plus points.

Cover Back: The back is practically the same. Quite how this has survived 42 years without any ring wear or even rim impression is amazing. This too with a massive vinyl slab inside.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Simply breathtaking, this centrefold simply looks new.

Top Edges: Barely worn and very straight. The odd tiny rub trace only, one on the very tip of the back.

Bottom Edges: Only light surface rubbing that registers little being pale, minus this, I would have to graded my full Mint(-).

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp to very with little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record entered on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Reference standard and again, practically as made. Solid, straight and very clean with barely any compression. Folded a fraction off-square, so the edges are not quite flush or parallel towards the right, but that a minor manufacturing issue and nothing to do with wear. All the text is pristine perfect as seen in my close-up pictures, and even the folds are totally unworn or scuffed. All major pluses for a cover like this.

Corners: Small and only light tip rubs on the right, the spine pair are superb. The odd small and light tip crease with very fine to excellent (or better) shape retained.

Cover Summary: The very best ‘In Hearing of Atomic Rooster’ cover I have ever seen bar none. This has always proved a difficult one to find clean with little wear, and this is on truly remarkable condition, most parts of it come very close to reminding of new. It could prove a huge upgrade for many and most fans and collectors should treasure it. The plain white unlined solid inner sleeve is included in near excellent condition. Minor ageing with the odd mark and any creasing gentle. All edges solid, one tiny edge split I neatly repaired and barely shows. With a massive record inside, it had little chance of surviving totally unscathed on the seams.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: even with a few surface marks that are totally superficial and non-sounding. A very fine visual copy that I feel sure has been played little. Very clean, shiny, intense black and a massive 185 gram pressing – yes true. Even the heaviest Test pressings of albums I have held, have not approached this type of weight. I am certain this record has not been played many times but has just picked up a few minor careless marks. As they are superficial with no effect on sound, they will cause no concern when playing. But not for the visual perfectionists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Just holding this extraordinary record is an experience. It also plays above its visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound. Barely any surface sound at all and no pops or clicks were noted, the small marks are simply ignored and this offers the ultimate sound and delivery only a very first issue can. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this rock classic. Deep grooves and ultimate audio presentation of the music, this ‘freak’-pressing will prove very difficult to find significantly better. Certainly an unusual example in every way, and many, if not most collectors will treasure it.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
