Brief Info: The second Atomic Rooster album, considered by many as their very best including myself. A dark and brooding album of quality heavy progressive rock, it sold fairly well in the UK peaking at No 12 in the charts. In the US, this was their first release with only modest sales peaking briefly at No 90. Without doubt, this was the band’s best line-up, they recorded one other album together, the also excellent ‘In Hearing Of’, but then the wheels fell-off with disagreements on musical direction and Hammon and Du Cann left to form Hard Stuff. Du Cann’s superb guitar-work is evident throughout, some reminiscent of his work with the legendary, if short-lived Andromeda. Crane’s organ-work is also superb and rarely sounded better. This a much sort-after prog mini-classic and although it does show up, it’s more often seen in very disappointing conditions - the cover especially is ruthlessly revealing and prone to all forms of wear. This on offer is not perfect by any means, but still a much better looker than many I have seen and the actual main four faces and spine have the least wear I have seen for some considerable time. The record is superb and plays beautifully throughout, the only blemish, one hiss sound that lasts a fraction of a second near the start. This too, a very early pressing with the rare 1 G matrix on side one, the earliest mother-stamper codes made.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+, one or rock’s most unforgiving covers with even Very Good examples being above average seen.

Cover Grade and Format: EX(-) simply marked down a little for bottom edge rubs that few will ever escape. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt sufaces that was printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group and including the B&C credits.

Cover Front: In terms of this cover, this looks very nice indeed. The actual artwork to the strange man-like creature is superb and has barely any traces of wear at all. Just some light and faint rubbing to the brown borders outside the white boxed artwork that few, if any will remain devoid of. No sticker marks or tears, again this cover has a terrible reputation for those too, many seen with large pull marks that have been coloured in. Few marks at all and just one small corner crease to the top right but no others. With deep, rich colour and a fine degree of freshness, this classic prog cover front will prove very difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is similar with only very mild surface rubs and the same corner crease as the front. An ultra fine vertical crease is just evidence under light just the left of the coloured text. But all the text is unworn with all characters sharp and easy to read. The mildest and lightest rim rubs possible, but look hard to see. Being totally honest, I consider both front and back quite exceptional for one of rock’s most unforgiving covers, most prog collectors will know this already of course.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb artwork and with any traces of wear very light indeed, both faces look fantastic. A mild secondary surface crease has formed to the right of the spine folds. This is almost unavoidable no the early covers that have the thick and wide spine.

Top Edges: A little light patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: As above for the front. The back is more moderate. This being slightly proud of the front due to very slight out-of-square folding in manufacture, this has little change of escaping some rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and no feathering, both guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this back edge, the front being sealed.

Spine and Text: Superb, almost as made with little wear at all. Solid, robust and very wide indeed. Still very straight, uncompressed and only folded a little off-square, both right edges still meet up very closely together and almost parallel. Just a slight drop on the bottom right edge as mentioned above. All text is perfect and unworn and this is truly exceptional on this perilous edge, even the folds are practicall unrubbed (please see my close-ups of this exceptional spine). Most are seen whitened with high percentages of text eroded or totally missing.

Corners: Some light to moderate tip rubs, most, predictably, bottom right on the back. The spine has little but some mild creases. Fine to very fine shape is largely retained.

Cover Summary: Given the fragility of this cover, EX(-) I feel is harsh and this truly does look much better than this grading may suggest. A strong all-round example that should please many collectors but not the connoisseurs who will have to wait for the near impossible.

The Inner Sleeve: The original unlined plain white inner is included. Aged a little with some mild toning or darkening but barely any creasing. The centre of the bottom has a very neat split from the heavy record, the others all intact and the top opening very neat indeed suggesting little record movements.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. All evidence, including superb sound suggests very few plays. Any surface blemishes are very few and light and this has to be my best example of this record yet. Visually a lovely record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality prog classic plays even above its high visual grading with practically to fault. The only minuscule blemish noted, and mentioned above already is an ultra brief hiss near the start of side one, lasting less than a second. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any other surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean and enjoyable pressing. Do not this for granted, B&C records are somewhat variable in pressing quality, often they can, and do crackle. This record gives a great account and was a pleasure to listen to. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly reitterated by the clean and focused sound. The tiny hiss apart, nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful prog record. This record (and possibly cover) will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
