Armand Boatman Trio - Hush Puppies LP on Chaton Recordings (Arizona), cat# CLR-432. No year given, sounds late 70's?
Underground, and impossibly scarce/obscure Arizona Jazz/Funk masterpiece.
A google search reveals only 1 popsike closed auction listing by Groove Merchant (for a nice chunk of change), some chat room chatter about that sale on the Vinyl Vulture site, a few postings on want lists for the LP and information about Mr. Boatman's past affiliations (Cal Tjader, Joe Venuti, etc.) and current projects, he is apparently still cookin' after all these years!
This appears to be his only LP from back in the day, and what an LP. Contains a scorching, funky Fender-Rhodes led version of Freddy Hubbard's Backlash, complete with nice sections of improvising. There is also a heavy rhythmic blues, Rhodes and acoustic bass, treatment of the spiritual Wade In the Water. The cover of Land of Makebelieve holds it's own as well. The rest of the album are originals and are all solid tracks.
Vinyl is VG+ light sleeve-burn and surface marks/scratching, nothing deep, plays very nice with mild and occasional surface noise.
Cover is VG+ as well, still in original shrink but has split spine (3 inches) and corner-wear/ 3 inch split on bottom edge.
