ARMAN RATIP – The Spy From Istanbul *ORIG Regal Zonophone LP* SLRZ 1038 (UK, Stereo, 1973)
Happy to present this superb, rare jazz LP from the Zonophone Lansdowne Series featuring Ratip alongside Keith Bailey, Harry Miller and trumpeter Marc Charig. To briefly summarise the condition of this: the sleeve shows signs of wear and age but the vinyl plays just fine with no impediments to report.
The single format, textured, non-laminated sleeve shows ring impression both to the front and the rear. The front has also picked up some toning and slight dirt rubs/foxing spots over its 38 years. Very light pen mark near the front opening edge. Top and bottom edges and spine are rubbed but not split though the spine text is hard to decipher. Some small creases to both faces and softened corners and opening edges. Still lies flat with no rippling or bends and is structurally sound with no tears or rips. Check the photos. I grade it a minimum VG- (Very Good Minus) though many would say full VG.
The deep crimson RZ labels are fine – no writing, stickers or such. Print is perfectly legible but slightly dulled. Moderate spindle evidence around the centre hole.
The medium weight vinyl visually cautiously grades VG+ (Very Good Plus) – possibly a near EX to some. There are some fine, faint and not easily visible hairlines, and occasional scuffs to both sides – none of which seems to impact upon the audio. Still maintains a good shine and in normal light looks pretty much clean without marks. There are NO deep, ugly or feelable marks. IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and apart from some ultra light dust static on run-ins and during the super quiet passages, plays a true EX (Excellent). You may pick up the (very) occasional soft tick but certainly NO repeated clicks or pops, NO snap or hiss and NO distortion or loss of clarity/lack of definition. Sounds loud and clear – even in the gentle sections.
A challenging and exciting listen and an album which seldom shows up for sale.
