Description

This is an auction for the incredibly rare Anne Briggs LP issued on Topic in 1971. Anne Briggs has been followed by many English folk singers including Maddy Prior, June Tabor and Frankie Armstrong who have learned from and appreciated her sweet, naive style.

Growing up in the outskirts of the city of Nottingham and surrounded by the coalfields of D.H. Lawrence's romantic novels, Anne Briggs was noticed by the godfather of English folk song - A.L. "Bert" Lloyd. She toured with Lloyd and recorded her first record; the delightful "Hazards of Love" EP. She also appeared on "The Bird in the Bush" and the industrial LP "The Iron Muse" for Topic.

Her final LP to be issued was the CBS "The Time has Come", until the Fledg'ling label issued unreleased tapes called "Sing a Song for You".

However, it is this eponymous LP that caused the greatest stir when it was released. Bleak and haunting are two words which immediately spring to mind when listening to this record. There is limited accompaniment with Johnny Moynihan on bouzouki and Anne accompanying herself on guitar and bouzouki on various tracks.

Many people believe Anne to be the central character in Richard Thompson's "Beeswing" with his reference to the rambling itch and the wolfhound at her feet. Anecdotal evidence has it that when her teenage daughter heard a record of her mother's, she didn't even know that her mother had ever sung professionally.

This incredibly rare LP is in excellent playing condition although it has several scuffs and surface marks. Nevertheless, it plays throughout with only occasional minor background noise. A strict grading would be VG+ but it plays much better than this.

The cover is in excellent condition with a few minor creases and some visible lines on the spine and top (see photo). On the back of the cover there is very light ring wear and the words "St Lawrence folk song society" hand written in biro on the top of the sleeve in quite small writing.

This is a rare opportunity to own the original Anne Briggs LP and in great playing condition! Bid with confidence. Email me with any questions.
