Label Conditions: Both superb: very clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple of light and small spindle marks each side and no wear around the hole area. A tremendous example of this record.

Rarity: Very scarce: an album that did not sell well and is seldom seen. A few included a poster, it being another of rock’s rarities. This copy INCLUDES it. The very first one I have ever had or seen myself.

Brief Info: A somewhat obscure piece from this Anglo-Irish band. Originally called Andwella’s Dream, their debut album, ‘Love and Poetry’ is a major rarity and is highly sort-after by serious collectors. This second album saw the band drop the ‘Dream’ and this one drifted more into progressive rock, it too is elusive and not seen at all often. Musically a very fine listen and a top quality record to enjoy. Issued on Reflection, a small label but clearly they did not skimp on vinyl, this is a really heavyweight top quality pressing and this has remained in fantastic, barely played condition. The cover is notoriously prone to all forms of wear, although this is not perfect with a little wear, mostly on the edges, it has fared considerably better than most of the small few others I have seen. The icing on the cake is the inclusion of the very rare poster that is rarely seen or offered. Although mounted once (pin-holes in corners), this also in very impressive condition and remains one of rock’s most elusive and legendary posters. So a very rare opportunity to own a hardly played, and complete copy of this elusive prog gem.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by West Brothers, includes the plain white inner sleeve and the poster.

Cover Front: An immensely difficult cover, being dark and unprotected, few survive in better conditions. This front has little to fault on the main area. Some rubbing on the corners and a little visible on the edges here-and-there. The lack of rubbing, creasing and sticker issues to this unforgiving surface is a major plus.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same again, a light scuff near the bottom right of the paler boxed area, then largely as per the front. The lack of penetrating ringwear is a huge bonus, this rarely escapes it.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside has little to fault at all and really looks impressive and clean.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush with light to moderate patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Moderate/Moderate+ more consistent rubbing, no splits.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with minimal wear and no trimming or enhancements. Record enters on this back edge, any minor thickening seen viewed end-on.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and very near parallel. The ends have rubbing, but any wear to the main surface, and even the folds is very light and gentle, a couple of chips and patchy light rubs with practically all text present and strong. This another plus point for this one.

Corners: Moderate rubbing with fine shape generally retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: Compared to the few others I have seen, this is certainly one of the best I have seen. Some wear to the edges and corners, but little to the main areas, including the perilous spine. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): and only marked down for natural ageing with relatively mild discolouration. A plain unlined white inner with two immaculate window circles and no edge splits or repairs.

The Poster: EXCELLENT: and this hardly does this rare poster full justice. This is gently aged with mild darkening of the plain back paper, but this actually enhances this impressive, and quite eerie poster. Made to resemble the Turin Shroud, this looks simply superb with slight natural ageing. Only really marked down for four drawing pin hole in the corners, so obviously, it has been mounted and enjoyed. But clearly as seen, this has been returned to its cover intact and strong. It has minimal traces of creasing, no tears and all manufactured folds strong. The image on the front looks superb as seen. When the album surfaces, it so rarely includes this poster, and finding it much better these days will prove immensely difficult.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean with impressive shine and very heavily pressed on thick, little used vinyl. A copy very little used on all the evidence with any fine surface marks seen under bright angled light. There are no penetrating stylus scratches and the record plays very impressively throughout. One to please many collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This somewhat ‘lost’ prog gem plays even above its high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Any surface sounds minimal, hardly anything, finding this better will prove very difficult. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
