NOTE: Before I get started something needs some clarifying amongst the so called "Blue Note/Prestige Officianados" regarding the Stereo/Mono issue. Whoever said that the Mono's are always better, especially for 1964 recordings was/is dead wrong, for any jazz buff worth his salt knows that these guys Van Gelder and Grauer were wizards in the studio, they were the George Martins of Jazz recordings. With stereo still a relatively new format these guys were tops in their game so that more often than not the STEREO mixes are far more superior to the mono recordings unless, remember, Unless they were recorded in mono and then re-processed for stereo. LP's like this and many other were recorded in TRUE Stereo, not reprocessed. And I should add here and now, this is not up for debate, this is not a discussion panel, merely fact that one of us had to bring to the attention to those who've been bamboozled into believing that Mono Blue Note/Prestige/Riverside LP's is the only way to go. About This Item: Now that we've cleared that up, here we have a really nice Near Mint original first pressing vinyl LP of Blue Note 84160 "Smokestack" from Andrew Hill. This is on the Blue Note Records Inc, New York USA Label which includes the RVG(Rudy Van Gelder) stamped seal of approval in the dead wax as well as the "ear" symbol and comes in original company inner sleeve. The vinyl is near mint with 2 ultra light superficial blemishes only, nothing which cuts into the grooves. Some might consider this a VG++, we do not as they're merely 2 ultra light marks. The labels are spotless with no writing, tears or wear which when you see the spindle holes as clean as they are it'll all make sense why the vinyl is so clean. One original owner who might've played this LP once or twice if that. The cover is just priceless with just the slightest hint of ring wear, there's no punched holes, cut corners, there's no writing, no seam splitting or spine wear. Except on the top right corner which has been dinged, the bottom seam has some wear to the point of being on the edge of splitting, however, with proper care this can easily be prevented from happening or worse spreading. In fact, to insure an further chance we will ship this with a plastic sleeve with the LP outside the jacket. There's a bonus writing on the upper right just above the Blue Note ST-84160 on the back. I say bonus because it's the signature in fine blue ballpoint of one Robert Quine(RIP 12/30/42 - 5/31/04) who in 1964 when he originally bought this LP was just a fan/collector, but 13+ years later would become one of NY's finest guitar slingers working with the likes of Lou Reed, Tom Waits, Brian Eno, John Zorn to name a few.
