CLASSIC UK ROOTS AND CULTURE MUSIC FROM THE 1990S IF YOU LIKE JAH SHAKA DIGITAL DUB

 

 

In my view the best Alpha & Omega recording available, and a classic of its genre. For those unfamiliar with A&O, this is dub reggae, stripped down to the bare minimum. Two things make this recording stand out -- first is the bass lines, the centrepiece of each track. Accompanying drum tracks are excellent, as are the light keyboard, guitar and sampling use. The bass is as deep and throbbing as it can possibly get, but at the same time it is well controlled and very tight. I've heard them being described as "dub in the roots tradition".
Secondly there are the vocals of Nishka -- a singer who really deserves to be huge in her own right. Her voice is so mellow, so calming. The opening track, Jah Protection, is superb.
Very very very highly recommended to any fan of chill-out, dub, reggae, ambient, rasta. I've bought a fair bit of dub and reggae, and this is by far my favorite, closely followed by Horace Andy's "In The Light" / "In the Light Dub".
When I listen to A&O and then, for example, Massive Attack, the massive stuff seems absolutely flimsy.
If anyone else would like to review this, please include some recommendations of similar stuff, as I've not yet come across anything quite like A&O.
Give this a listen, cannot recommend it enough.
