Rarity: The album itself is fairly common – the album that really got this band noticed with the famous hit single of the same name. But many factors make the copies rarer and much harder to find, this is mostly to do with the packaging. One of the slickest and cleverest covers of the decade: the originals included an open up school-desk with two ‘feet’ on the back cover, these held erect with two retaining lugs. These were invariably ‘built’ and then broken down again, often many times. Hence, finding this fragile desk cover with the fragile pieces intact and still looking anything like neat is difficult. The front cover opens like a real school-desk and when first purchased, the contents must have caused shockwaves. Around the record that was housed inside a semi-round polythene inner sleeve, was a pair of girl’s knickers. These are very delicate indeed and so many were simply disguarded as they were awkward to store inside the cover on a regular basis. Those that survive became very grubby, torn or seen in shreds. The knickers are elasticated around the leg entrances and the waist part, most around have the ‘stretch’ gone making the pants floppy and heavily misshapen. Avoiding ageing at the very least to these fragile undergarments is near impossible too. The original polythene inner was so often substituted for something more robust and again this important element to this set is often seen missing let alone intact. Lastly, the record proved very popular especially with teenager record buyers of the time – I was one myself and I can say, along with Zappa, Alice Cooper was my teenage hero. Some things never change and I am still a big fan of the early Alice Cooper band and a Zappa Fan(atic). I bought a copy of this album when first issued, I disgarded the pants and played the record many, many times (not this copy hasten to add). From day one as a record buyer, I looked after my albums with immense care, alas many didn’t and this title is never easy to find in top conditions. This one is in super condition and is complete with all parts, and I consider this a rare one as such. I will describe all the elements in great detail further down.

Album Information: A classic from the king of the macabre featuring his most famous hit single of the same name. Featuring his original, and greatest line-up ever of Alice, Smith, Dunaway, Bruce and Buxton. Alice’s rebellic classic never dates, the song always sounds far better on it’s proper album rather than compilations. This UK-made early classic features the original elasticated, perforated paper girl’s knickers in white (the US versions were in pink). The delicate rounded inner and fully working school desk are also included. The fragile paper panties are now getting elusive - I bought a copy of this back in 1972 and what was the first thing I did? - ditch the pants - they just got in the way. I was not the only one I guess because finding this album with them is getting very hard indeed and try finding them in anything like decent condition. These have aged a little with some mildish discolour and some toning spots (few avoid them). The fold-out school desk with the pull down feet and supports are immensely fragile and these ‘working’ parts were always prone to bending and tearing or severe creasing. Often seen with parts actually missing, simply ripped off or poorly stuck back in place and looking dreadful. All parts here are intact and still sit flush to the main cover, that is VERY unusual. The top hinge also was prone to weakening or splitting, this one is so fresh and looks barely ‘used’. I could hardly open it up any further for my picture without risking damage. With few blemishes to one of the most delicate covers ever made, this is a superb, complete overall package that will please most discerning Alice fans and collectors. I have rarely heard a better copy of this record either.

Cover (and Contents) Potential for Wear & Damage: Very High: this delicate cover replicates a vintage school desk and has a front hinge for the ‘lid’. Underneath (the back) has two folding ‘legs’ with an ultra fragile tabs that locks the legs into place. Most of these were ‘built’, hence few will be found in top conditions with legs and supports being floppy, weak, creased and torn (often ripped off totally). The legs on this example have rarely (if indeed ever) been extended with the foldlines looking neat and little used with ultar neat, unburred edges and these are still very much part of the cover rather than being flopping around when lifted. The tabs are both fully intact and again sit neatly against the cover bottom. The left one has an ultra faint surface crease but is ultra sharp and burred, looking almost as made. The right one has a slightly heavier central surface crease and a tiny burr trace on the left edge (look hard). Barely any ink is lost at all however and again this is very neat overall and is also flush. The desk lid bottom has rounded corners which often become very burred and tatty. The bottom right rounded area has very slightly thickened with a meer trace of burring (being critical) but is still very neat indeed, the left rounded corner is nigh-on perfect. It is no real surprise these fragile corners wear as the hinged top lid part is longer than the bottom cover, like a real desk so the fingers can actually lift it up, both corners will be hard to find much neater in an original cover. The edge sealed parts, atop the lid, also become split and torn where the lid has been forceably opened (usually too far) and damage becomes rife. This has none of that at all and the hinge part is the best I have seen since purchasing my new one all those years ago. This one includes the original inner that is rounded on the bottom only (beware of substitutes). Arguably the most fragile part of the set, and so often missing altogether. This has aged a little with a small a couple of small side splits and the almost mandatory crinkle. The panties are very delicate indeed and seldom seen at all, let alone in decent condition. Made with delicate paper and patterned with ‘vent holes’ and elasticated. Most existing examples have become very tatty, many falling apart literally with the elastic totally losing its stretch. Here full stretch is perfectly retained on the legs and top and, although a little darker than when new with some toning spots, they still look very nice. Always creased of course, but to find a pair with no splits or tears is almost remarkable. Summing up: all parts present and mostly in fine to very fine conditions, more finer detail on the individual parts below.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and one of the least worn and attractive UK-made ones I have seen for some considerable time. It’s the original fold out desk type as explained above. No laminate with a matt finish and fragile as they get. A desk to please most Alice fans and even their teachers.

Cover Front: Very clean indeed with supreme rich colour retained with practically nothing to fault at all. The hinge part is pristine with practically no evidence at all of even being lifted. NOTE: the only issue is the original owner (or conceivably, the shop-seller), incredibly neatly and only small, decided to date and price this album with very fine pen. This near the bottom right corner, it barely even registers amongst all the printed matter on this authentic looking desk top. The detail written is: ‘3/12/72 £1.75’. Personally I think this is a positive as it accurately dates and prices this set, clearly a very early copy indeed. Some may consider it differently, but if it is an issue, do not bid.

Cover Back: I have pretty much described the format above, but to reitterate again, this too is near perfect, any blemishes barely register. All the pull out folded parts are very neat, the legs almost as made infact. No tears or damage, just a couple of light creases. The fact these parts still sit flush to the cover’s bottom is a huge bonus and this is far from common.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside of the desk lid has a superb band picture (seen in close-up). So fresh and unused, this cannot be opened very far without risk of damage. The very top edge has two very small surface pulls, for me, the only noteworthy ‘damage’ (if you can call it that) on the entire cover. Hidden from view when closed and only very small anyway. This apart, the inside looks practically as made and fantastic. Interesting items printed inside include a pen-knife, a catapault, marbles, chewing gum and strangely, a comic featuring Liberace.

Top Edge: This is the spine edge and has all text pristine perfect. This edge is solid, straight and uncompressed, practically as clean and fresh and unworn as when made back in 72.

Bottom Edges: This edge overhangs the bottom, which I am sure was quite intentional, hence the end is single thickness and vulnerable. Still very crisp with just the aforementioned slight thickening to the right rounded corner. The record enters from this ‘lift-up’ edge (just like a real school desk top).

Right/Left Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear or feathering. The top, closed parts are solid and unworn too and the foldline which remains ultra solid and unstressed – as new again. Every millimetre of the hold hinge is pristine.

Corners: The top pair are as almost new, any tip rubs tiny and superb shape retained. As stated, slight thicking to the bottom right viewed end-on, difficult to avoid totally because the cover rests upon these delicate areas.

Cover Summary: A fantastic looking example of this very fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors. If the two tiny inside surface pulls or the written information are issues, do not bid.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(+): so often missing or subsituted for something similar. This being a clear polythene inner that has a squared off, open top for entry. The bottom is rounded and this will never be that easy to fake (although modern Japanese audiophile inners are quite similar), this is totally for real. This has crinkle but no hard creases. It shows some small toning or age spots when help to light but is still pretty clear. Two smallish splits to one of the straight edges but the circular bottom is fully intact. Clearly, this will rarely be found anything like looking new and being honest, it’s just nice to have it at all as many simply replaced it with a more traditional square lined inner that will fit inside this cover far more easily.

Panties Condition: EXCELLENT: hard enough to find let alone intact. Seems slightly bizarre to have to grade a pair of girl’s paper knickers, but these remain an integral part of this set. It’s probably a good idea to store them as they were issued (as seen in my picture) in the long term, it helps them to keep their shape better. Anyone who has seen or own these will know how frail and vulnerable these are, and quite rare now too, they only came with the early pressed copies. Perforated paper and elasticated on all three openings, all make for fall apart quick and discoloured if not stored properly. These have darkened a little with some small toning spots but remain fully intact with NO repairs. The elastic still has amazing, as new stretch and no tears or splits that I can see. Still very solid - obviously a little crumpling and creasing, but for an item like this, now fast approaching 40-years-old, pretty amazing. Were such things ever made to last this long? – remember these paper panties could never be washed or spiffed up, they would simply fall apart or even disintegrate. This pair are not pristine, but given all the facts, they are still quite impressive and many would consider they look perfect with just the right amount of ageing.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading & Sound: EXCELLENT(++): this has all the hallmarks of a little played record, it looks great and plays impeccably with nigh-on perfect sound. The title song has a tiny mark that emits a couple of very faint ticks, this the only blemish on the record, but listen hard to even notice. This UK pressing has incredible sound and fidelity, certainly not one that has been over-used or abused by a teenage buyer of the time. The sound seems slightly more open and dynamic and when the plug is pulled at the end of the title song, it’s really scary. Totally clean, precise and focuse audio quality, even the brass parts are perfectly crisp with no surface noise, and no other pops or clicks were noted. Totally distortion free with no unwanted pressing sounds, this record is nigh-on unbeatable and was a real thrill to hear. The twang of the bass guitar on ‘Street Fight’ and ‘Blue Turk’ is totally convincing as are those smashing bottles. For those collectors who want analogue sound near it’s very best, this will not be beaten easily and it was a joy to hear again like this. Strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
