Despite being born in the south Manchester district, Barry Adamson doesn't really invoke many images of Moss Side on this, his third solo album post-Magazine, which originally hit in 1996. Sure, there are moments - for example, 'Achieved In the Valley of Dolls' - where things tread close to Happy Mondays or Black Grape, only with a dash of Anthony & The Johnsons, but on the whole this is a far cry from what most would consider the sound of Cottonopolis.

Ranging from the appropriately titled, inflated-but-not-overblown cinematic brass number, 'The Big Bamboozle', to the ever-so-slightly-unsettling fairy tale narration and fantasy sounds of 'Vermillion Kisses', and the late night, sexy sax and windswept minimalism of 'In The Moment of Clarity', this is beautifully broad and wholly adventurous stuff you actively want to get lost in.
