Description
ARTIST: Edith Wilson with Johnny Dunn's Jazz Hounds
LABEL: Columbia 80304-2
TITLES: That Thing Called Love
CONDITION: E-
DESCRIPTION:
This is Edith Wilson's personal copy of a one sided Columbia shellac test of "That Thing Called Love" which she recorded in 1922 and was never issued. I don't believe it's ever been reissued and this is probably the only existing copy of her performance of this song. Mamie Smith also sang it on her first Okeh release. Description on label of "scattered dents all over in master" has no effect on play of this test. Some scuffs and small scratches that occasionally tic.
Mamie's treatment accompanied by Fred Hager's group of white musicians was sad and melancholy. Here we have a gutsier version backed by Johnny Dunn's Jazz Hounds who also take off on an fiery instrumental chorus. Edith Wilson sings Perry Bradford's lyrics, then finishes with these spoken verses:
Went to the furniture store to buy a rocking chair, if the blues overtake me gonna rock away from here
I don't want no sugar in my tea, the man I love is sweet enough for me
A high yellow will make a tadpole hug a whale, and a brown skin will make a man break his tail
Nobody knows what that thing called love will do.

ADD BOMBASTIUM TO YOUR SAVED EBAY SEARCHES. My curated weekly eBay listings always contain an interesting cross section for a wide variety of interests including on occasion paper ephemera, post-war 78s and LPs.I am listing a run of 10" jazz, blues and world music LPs that have been in storage for over 50 years. For the most part, they are close to new, possibly having being played a couple times, but all were well cared for until they were boxed up long ago. They will fit into one of the vinyl grades below, and none in lesser condition will be listed with the possible exception of a few rarities.
Vinyl Grading scale:
M- - Like new, as close to new without being still sealed.EX - Similar to M- with very minor handling signs, small superficial scuffs from sliding in and out of jacket.VG+ - Shiny with no groove wear, a few more signs of handling, light inaudible marks.VG - Shiny without the mirror like surface, light signs of groove play, spindle marks, light surface scratches or scuffs. Looking more like a lightly used but well taken care of record.
Covers will be described separately. On Jul-21-24 at 12:04:58 PDT, seller added the following information:
