Despite having a Manhattan skyline as it's insignia, this label would appear to have been based at the other end of the United States, in New Orleans - sine it was distributed by Dover Records, Inc. Cosimo Matassa operated Dover for many years, and his output of the 50s and 60s, in particular, helped to create the 'Cosimo Sound' that can be heard on material by Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Smiley Lewis, Jimmy Clanton, and Dr. John, to name but a few. The Manhattan label (run by Mike Curb), was just one of Dover's offshoots, operating briefly during 1966-1967. Most of the seventeen singles released were a mixture of pop and garage, from the likes of The Painted Faces (from Florida), The 13th Committee (featuting rockabilly heroine, Barbara Pittman) and The Mysteries (I wonder who they were?) Back in the early 80s, "I Can't Be A Fool For You" by Danny Owens always used to get me lurching across the dancefloor, and it's still the most pricey of the three Northern 45s on Manhattan. The other two both feature a young lady named Lydia Marcelle, who recorded at least four singles in the mid-60s. She debuted on Atco in 1965, and then made an appearance on Nola: the latter was Miss Marcelle's only British release, on the famous Sue label. Finally, she ended up at Manhattan, staying for two 45s. The first is an excellent mid-priced dancer, but on offer here is a copy of her much scarcer second outing on the label.

"It's Not Like You" used to be more of a favourite among the Wigan Casino ladies, who preferred light-hearted finger-clickers, rather than manic stompers. The 'little girl' vocals that pour forth from the young singer, sound much too childishly innocent for her to have even kissed a man before, yet the lyrics are more mature. "Imitation Love" is a fantastic mid-tempo dancer in it's own right, with a very catchy chorus. All four of Lydia's Manhattan sides were penned and produced by Harley Hatcher (who often worked with Mike Curb - and still does).

This one was count?!feited almost exactly in the 70s, with an identical label - but the 'press gang' couldn't resist trying the fancy new trend, and reproduced it in a fetching red vinyl. What a giveaway! This is an original black vinyl issue, with a 'Bell Sound' stamp in the deadwax.

This one is currently priced by Manship at £200 for a minter.

The vinyl has a handful of light "spiders webs" (mainly around the edges), but both sides play very near to mint.

The A-side label has a number of rough dimples on the left-hand side (see scan), which appear to date from the pressing plant. The B-side label is immaculate.

There is a name ('R. Ballinger') and number ('86') scratched into the deadwax on the A-side only.

The edges are completely chip-free.
