Rosco Gordon (1928 - 2002)

The life of this gritty R&B performer was full of anomalies, and it all started the day that he was born. The general concensus of opinion is that he began his life on 10th April 1928, but it's sometimes said to have been 23rd December 1933, or 10th April 1934. Not even the Queen has three birthdays!

Then there's the spelling of Rosco - or should that be Roscoe? He used either variation throughout his long career - in fact, he used both of them on this Jomada 45, his only outing on the label. The promo copy that I sold recently clearly credited Roscoe Gordon, but the normal issue copies, like the one on offer here, bill him as Rosco Gordon.

There's another anomaly - the discography given on the Wangdangdula site lists this particular 45 as coming out on Soma/Jomada. Soma was a Minneapolis label, and had no connection whatsoever to Jomada (based in Philadelphia, and co-owned by John Madara and Dave White). So why the error? On promo copies it's not clear how this mistake might have happened; but looking at issue copies the insignia for Jomada is given in a form of italics. The Jomada looks suspiciously like Somada, and hence the erroneous connection to Soma. The Wangdangdula site also lists this single as appearing on Calla 802, a number which doesn't seem to exist. Both "Jessie James" and "You Got My Bait" were penned by Rosco and his wife, Barbara Gordon (nee Kerr). If I really wanted to split hairs, I could say that this title should be "Jesse James", since that's the usual spelling of the outlaw's name.

Rosco Gordon deserves to be at least as famous as his southern peers - namely Bobby Bland and B.B. King (both of whom jammed with R.G. in the Memphis combo, The Beale Streeters). It was only by accident of some awkward record deals that he remains relatively obscure today. He has also been lauded as one of the fathers of Jamaican music, and listening to early tracks like "No More Doggin'" it's easy to see the roots of ska. However, there perhaps also lie the roots of his failure on the pop market. While "No More Doggin'" became a huge hit with the black audiences of 1952, were there any disc jockeys brave enough to give it an airing to white audiences? I'm assuming that Americans know what the word "dogging" has come to mean in the UK!

There's one further piece of dis-information about this particular recording. Almost every site I've visited states that Dee Dee Warwick is one of the backing singers. However, since there don't appear to be any backing singers anywhere in the mix, is this yet another little anomaly?

The vinyl on the A-side has the barest minimum of play signs, and the sound quality is like new. The B-side looks and plays the same, but is pressed slightly off-centre. If you remove your adaptor, a nudge in the right direction will make it play perfectly, but there's not much noteable difference anyway, since the condition is only marginal.

Both labels are immaculate.
