E. Rodney Jones (1927 - 2004)

Some American disc jockeys not only fancied themselves as music players, but as music makers, or music promoters. Frankie Crocker, Eddie O'Jay, Herb Kent ('The Kool Gent'), Pervis Spann, LeBaron Taylor, Jocko Henderson, Al Perkins - there were many others, but one of the greatest of all has to be Earl Rodney Jones. He began his career in St. Louis, Missouri, and by the 60s was working at Chicago's legendary station WVON. He recorded both of these Tuff singles during this period, and each shows his cool rap approach over a stomping back beat. "Peace Of Mind", in particular, is a real scorcher. There are lots of trumpet fanfares, a blistering sax break, and a relentless on-the-fours beat that ends with a dead-stop. Over this, E.R.J. raps up a storm as he tells his missus to respect the few hours of quality time he has left in a day, after he's finished work: "Listen, home is a castle baby, where man is king". I suspect that Rodney didn't have any supper waiting on the table, the day he recorded this outrageously sexist tune! The B-side is another firm Northern dancer, making it two for the price of one.

I've added a 10-minute interview with Mr. Jones, recorded shortly before his death.

You can still hear the same deep voice that pervades both of his Tuff singles. Note that there is some confusion as to whether the DJ Yvonne Sterling, who's mentioned in the interview, is the same person as the singer of that name, who recorded "I Don't Wanna Get Away From Your Love", "I Got To Get Close To You", etc.

This is a good example of the sort of single you would find in the 'used but not abused' section of a top sellers sales list. The vinyl has a lot of scuffs and scrapes - not great to look at by any stretch of the imagination. Incredibly, both sides play almost as good as new, with only light background noise during the run-in, and a couple of ticks near the beginning of the B-side. My dual grading says it all.

The A-side label has a mild-to-medium amount of ring-wear (see scan). The B-side label has a similar amount of ring-wear, plus a couple of brown blotchy areas near the bottom. There is also a deletion hole.

This record has been played on both sides to verify condition, but there's a full money-back guarantee on all my sales, and I'll refund anyone who isn't totally captivated.
