GRADING:

below are my grading standards as used on my auctions

Following are definitions of record condition. They are based on those published in Goldmine and Discoveries magazines, although I try to be more specific where practical to clarify grading.

Generally, unless obvious or mint, I carefully inspect the record, holding the record close to a bright light, usually a 75 watt bulb minimum (or equivalent fluorescent), sufficient to properly see wear and scratches. I then play grade the record for a few seconds, and play through scuffed/scratched/questionable areas to determine proper grade and evaluate any surface flaws present, (skip or prominent scratch?) if any. Generally I clean any records which require it before grading. I grade conservatively, and as objectively and consistently as I can. Many records are discarded which do not meet minimum requirements.

ALL RECORDS ARE GUARANTEED TO BE AS DESCRIBED, OR YOUR MONEY BACK, WITH RETURN.

FIRST, SOME DEFINITIONS OF SURFACE FLAWS WHICH MAY BE NOTED ABOVE ON RECORD SURFACE:
(These are MY interpretations and observations, and may not be the same as any other seller)
SCUFF- A surface mark by a blunt or relatively soft object which only mars the top surface of the disc, and is not audible, unless noted. Thus, "minor scuffs" or "minor scuffs do not affect play" or "paper scuffs" may be noted. A scuff is not a scratch. 
SUPERFICIAL SCRATCH- Tiny lines made by sharp object only on the surface of the disc, not deep enough to affect grooves, and is inaudible.
LIGHT SCRATCH- Mark made by sharp object barely deep enough to affect grooves. Produces very light tick that is mostly at background level and not of concern. Can be felt with a fingernail, but probably not picked. Heard only at lead-in or quiet passages.
MEDIUM SCRATCH- Mark made by sharp object which is deep enough to definitely affect grooves. Can be picked by a fingernail. Produces a click or light pop which is audible through all but fairly loud passages, but below level of music, except quiet passages. Typical for carelessly handled records, generally tolerated unless numerous or long.
HEAVY SCRATCH- Mark made by sharp object which is very deep and wide, and produces loud pops which are equal to or louder than music and may cause skips and repeats. Intolerable even if there is only one. I will not list a record with a heavy scratch unless the record is rather rare.
NOTE- Any of the flaws listed may also have some of the lesser flaws present also. Thus, if a medium scratch is noted, then there may be some light scratches and scuffs too, which may or may not be specifically noted.
BAD GROOVE- A groove which has unusual level of hiss and noise, caused most likely by excessive play or someone pushing down on the tone arm during play (yes, it happens, there are idiots out there). May last only a moment, or for several revolutions of the record. Most often encountered at lead-in.

GENERAL CONDITION CODE DEFINITIONS:

SS = STILL SEALED: Usually as applied to an LP, record is still sealed in factory shrink-wrap, as would be purchased from a store.

M = MINT = 10: Record appears to be new, never played, looks perfect.

NM = NEAR MINT = 9.5: Near new. No visible wear, no background noise. No surface flaws of any consequence. Label like new or near new, writing or similar flaws noted. Cover has no significant wear or damage, flaws like writing noted.

M- = MINT MINUS = 9.0: Has been played, but groove wear is not apparent. Plays quiet, or with negligible background noise. No scratches, but may have inaudible handling scuffs or barely noticeable label wear. Label and cover writing, etc., noted. Picture sleeves & LP covers may have only the very slightest signs of wear.

VG++ = VERY GOOD PLUS PLUS = EXCELLENT = 8.5: Barely noticeable play wear and background noise. May have surface scuffs and/or superficial marks, which will be inaudible or indiscernible from the background, no scratches. Very nice, flaws noted.

VG+ = VERY GOOD PLUS = 8.0: Light background noise, audible only at lead-in or quiet parts of song. Surface scuffs and insignificant scratches are indiscernible from background noise. May have a very light scratch or two, which will be described. Slight label wear. Picture sleeve has slight wear or creases, no seam splits. Flaws like writing noted. LP covers may have slight surface and edge wear, or minor creases, or small corner dings. No seam splits or surface tears.

VG = VERY GOOD = 7.0: Average wear is visible. Light to moderate background noise is well below the music, no distortion. There may be some light scratches, but nothing prominent. Label or picture sleeves may have light ring wear. Label or sleeve writing etc. noted. LP covers may have general surface and edge wear, and may have noticeable creases or corner dings. Cover may have seam splits or tears, but only if noted and described. Added flaws like writing, stickers or cut-out holes will be noted.

VG- = VERY GOOD MINUS = 6.0: Wear and noise a bit worse, but still well below the music. Scuffs and scratches are not prominent, but are more noticeable, still well below music level. Labels, pic sleeves or LP covers are a notch worse in all respects, but still respectable.

G = GOOD - 5.0- Well played record, noticeable background noise. May have scuffs and medium scratches causing numerous ticks and pops but no heavy ones which are as loud as the music. Music is still essentially clear. Labels, pic sleeves and covers may have full ring wear and/or edge wear. Pic slv or LP cover may have seam splits, but not the entire length. May have flaws like writing, stickers, etc.

F = FAIR = 4.0: Record is heavily played, noise is about equal to music, possibly with distortion, and there are scuffs and scratches, some heavy, but it doesn't skip or repeat unless noted. Labels, pic sleeves and LP covers are probably well worn and have numerous flaws and seam splits.

P = POOR = 3.0: Record is a mess, it barely plays, sounds awful, and skips. Labels, pic sleeves and LP covers are barely useable, replete with wear, tears, numerous flaws, splits, etc. LP covers may be fully split open. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
