Fear is an American punk band from Los Angeles, California that formed in 1977 and is still a band today. Credited for helping to shape the sound and style of American hardcore punk, the band started out as part of the early California punk rock scene, and gained national prominence after an infamous 1981 performance on Saturday Night Live. Frontman Lee Ving has been the band's only constant member. Since their formation, the band went through various lineup changes and at one point featured Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers on bass. The Record is the debut album by Los Angeles hardcore punk band Fear, released in 1982. "We Got to Get Out of This Place" is a cover of the song made famous by The Animals.
Slash Records is a record label in Los Angeles, originally specializing in local and punk rock bands. The label was formed in 1978 by Bob Biggs as an outgrowth of the Los Angeles-based fanzine, Slash. Biggs, a painter, initiated the label with a seven-inch single from The Germs in 1978. A full album from that band was released the next year, and X's Los Angeles followed in 1980. Until 1981, the label was distributed through Jem; when that company went bankrupt, Slash entered into a distribution deal with Warner Bros., a move that was among the first of the collaborations between independent and major labels in American punk music. During the time of this arrangement, the label released albums by prominent Los Angeles punk and Rock and roll bands, including Fear, The Blasters, L7 and Los Lobos.
