Description
This is for an original 78 RPM recording of Dale Hawkins Susie-Q/Don’t Treat Me This Way which was released on the Checker label in 1957 along with the 45 that was released by Checker. The song was written by Dale Hawkins and Robert Chaisson and recorded at the KWKH Radio station in Shreveport Louisiana with legendary guitarist James Burton playing guitar along with doing the guitar solo. The master tape was sold to Checker Records who would release the song in May 1957. Sometime after the recording and before the release of the song, Stan Lewis, the owner of Jewel/Paula Records and who’s daughter Susan was the inspiration of the song, and Eleanor Broadwater, the wife of Nashville DJ Gene Nobles were given writing credits so they could collect royalties from the song. This version of the Dale Hawkins classic is included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fames “500 Songs that shaped Rock and Roll”. The song is such an amazing classic that it has been recorded by an array of artists including, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Everly Brothers, The Rolling Stones, Suzi Quatro, Dale’s cousin Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks, The Trashmen (Surfin’ Bird), Johnny Rivers, Jose Feliciano, Johnny Winter and Bobby McFerrin to name just a few. The record is in incredible condition and looks like it has never been played. I tried to take photos of the record at an angle to show how clean the grooves are. I don’t have anything to play it on so I am not really sure how it would sound on an actual 78 turntable. I’ve also included a Checker 45 of Dale Hawkins doing Susie-Q which looks nice but there is a 21 written on the label to correspond with someones 45 caddy.
