The pachuco mambo is a Mexican-American craze dance music that alternated and combined Afro-American and Afro-Caribbean styles. Started in the late 1930s, Mexican-American youth, rejected by both Mexican and American society, invented a counterculture that expressed social tension through own language ("Caló"), fashion, culture, dances, and musical tastes, all exciting and untamed. The pachuco mambo exuberantly transformed the painful experience of Mexican-American fans who felt trapped in the midst of two cultures, and brought together the Chicano, Anglo, and African-American audience, laying the foundation for Chicano music. Main stars of the genre are featured in this collection: Don Tosti, a Mexican-American composer from Texas, who moved to Los Angeles as a teenager, and Lalo Guerrero, from Arizona. Both of them were pivotal and created Mexican blues jump, that is, the pachuco mambo or boogie, which used rhythms of swing, boogie woogie, and rumba with lyrics in Spanglish and in Caló, the Spanglish language of the Pachucos. Tosti's "Pachuco Boogie", recorded in 1948, was the first Latin song to sell a million records.
