Recorded in early 1967, merely months before John Coltrane's death in July of that year, and released briefly, on his own, proprietary "Coltrane" label, original versions of the "Cosmic Music" are the singularly, insanely rare of all Coltrane albums and easily fetch in excess of $500.00 when found in decent shape. The album comes in no less than three variants / versions:

(1)            The first version came in gatefold covers which were NOT laminated AND DID NOT HAVE A WHITE MARGIN ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE; this version uses the original, first label (pink Coltrane label with ‘paisley’ motif on the label). This was the first, UNMIXED version of the album which – if our understanding is correct – was the original, Coltrane-approved mix – the one he personally supervised. It is impossible to determine with some certainty exactly WHEN the album was released. While it is possible that the album was released while Coltrane was still alive (prior to June 1967), it is more likely that the album came out at some point between July 1967 and April 1968.

(2)            The second version the one we are offering here – is very similar to the first, but with some significant differences. The second pressing has a cover with a white right-hand margin on the front cover with a dedication to Martin Luther King, thus making it all but certain that it was released AFTER Martin Luther King’s assassination (April 1968). This version uses second version of the label (all-pink label with black print, without “cosmic” (paisley) motif). This, second version utilizes ALICE COLTRANE mix (which is marginally different from the original mix: slightly more treble-ish and re-equalized but otherwise identical to the Coltrane’s own). The second version of the COVER – unlike the first one – was fully laminated, and was very similar in texture and appearance to the Impulse’s other mid-60’s covers, leading us to believe that the second version – unlike the first – was distributed by Impulse records (Bell Sound stamp in the dead wax bears out this conclusion)

(3)            About two years after Coltrane died, ABC/Impulse reissued the album with a different cover, and even these, second, pressings are notoriously difficult to find. This, third version is massively different from the previous two versions, with overdubs and various touches added (presumably by Alice Coltrane?) , one track DELETED from the original program, and with COMPLETELY DIFFERENT cover from the first two versions.

It remains unknown and undocumented who and how distributed the album. Our qualified guess is that Alice Coltrane distributed the album herself, directly from her and John Coltrane’s house in Deer Park, Long Island, New York, possibly with some technical and logistical help from ABC-Paramount or Impulse records.

This album is the finest example of what Alice Coltrane had in mind when, in an 1969 interview, she noted that, by the end of his life (to paraphrase her words), John Coltrane started conceiving his music, and universe, in terms of math equations. This is a difficult, demanding, music; Definitely NOT for the feint of heart.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         The gatefold cover has partially split seams on 1 out of 4 "legs" of the cover (about 4 inches / 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters). This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         The laminated cover has a slight loss (flaking) of lamination along the opening edge (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY); this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers; lamination is just beginning to peel-off along the opening edge; however, since the underlying layer of the cover is ALSO laminated, the peeled-off spots are only a minor visual distraction

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-         No writing

-         No stamps

-         No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-         No stains

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels

-         No water damage

-         No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.

-         No warping

-         No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-         No glue traces or wax residue.

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
