NM./ EX. Original First Press (1982). Zapp II is the critically acclaimed second studio album by the influential Ohio funk band Zapp, released by Warner Bros. Records.
Masterminded by frontman and talkbox pioneer Roger Troutman, the vinyl LP is a foundational pillar of heavy synth-funk, electro, and P-Funk. Its electric basslines and signature talkbox production heavily influenced the West Coast G-funk hip-hop sound of the 1990s, serving as a direct inspiration for tracks like Dr. Dre's "California Love".
'Zapp II' features six groove-heavy tracks divided across two sides: Side A:"Dance Floor," the group’s massive, up-tempo club hit anchors the first half of the album, "Playin' Kinda Ruff," is a hard-hitting, syncopated rhythm showcase, and "Doo Wa Ditty (Blow That Thing)," a highly energetic, fan-favorite party anthem round out Side A.
Side B:"Do You Really Want an Answer?" is a slower, more melodic jam utilizing tinkling keys and a weeping guitar. "Come On" a driving, dance-focused groove, and "A Touch of Jazz (Playin' Kinda Ruff Part II)" an instrumental workout giving various instruments a solo spotlight completes the tracklist for the LP.
Zapp II cemented Zapp’s legacy as commercial juggernauts and architects of the "West Coast (Cali) Sound," and was officially certified Gold 1982, just six months after its initial release.
