Gladiator is a stone-cold classic from Ridley Scott, and even though we have now been blessed with a second movie in the series, the OG takes some beating. And what better way to relive it than through sound, epic orchestral writing and electronic underscoring all composed by the frankly untouchable Hans Zimmer of American Beauty and The Dark Knight association alongside Lisa Gerrard. 'The Battle' and 'Barbarian Horde' rely on sustained brass clusters, driving ostinatos and dense low-end. 'Earth' introduces the central theme through cello and trumpet over slow harmonic movement, 'Patricide' and 'The Might of Rome' use string-led structures with gradual dynamic build, while 'Now We Are Free' centres on vocal lines against minimal accompaniment. With or without the accompanying visual narrative, it's a rich listen.
