Rarity: Scarcer as an early pressing with the A1/B1 matrixes and the original matt finished cover and no Warner logos on the labels. Later pressings had a semi-gloss finish cover and many were then pressed overseas.

Brief Info: The first full live Zappa album and a brilliant set issued to mimick a bootleg in protest over the number being made of Frank’s music at this time. Zappa was not happy with his music often being made available before official release and this cover, by Carl Schenkel (he made him do it), is simplistic and deliberately made to look like plain with pencil writing (as referred to on Just Another Band From LA, the follow-up live album. This was also the first full Mothers album to feature Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan on vocals – ex-Turtles – they did appear on some tracks on Zappa’s second solo album Chunga’s Revenge. The classic Turtles single ‘Happy Together’ is covered here and given the full Mother’s treatment. This duo had unique vocal presentation and just try to follow the lyrics on ‘Latex Solar Beef’, it makes Sparks sound easy. This now legendary live set, recorded (obviously) at Bill Graham’s Fillmore East, saw Zappa’s Mothers take a new direction with a largely new line-up. More satire which was very bawdy, blended with some superb rock. Most of the material was brand new and previously unissued. Lyrically, this does not hold back with tales of being on the road. Exploits with mud sharks with plenty of sexual references and innuendo. Most of the satire revolves around groupies of which there were plenty at this time. But between the explicit humour are some stunning instrumentals and soloing notably by Zappa and Don Preston on mini-Moog (‘Lonesome Electric Turkey’), part of the encore. Although the cover represented a bootleg, the album’s production does not and is well recorded and produced by Frank and far better than the harsh-sounding digital version. Now something more than worthy of mention is the CD version of the album. It does go somewhat against the grain for me to criticise my long-time music hero, but some of Zappa’s CD issues are a little disappointing and somewhat baffling. The official CD issue of this title omits ‘Willie the Pimp part two’ – I still cannot understand why. A blistering fuzz guitar solo opens side two of the record but it totally cut out on the CD, I guess Frank had his reasons but it makes no sense to me at all. So the vinyl version is still the only way to hear this landmark Mothers album in its full uncut glory. For my money too, it still sounds far better on record, the CD version is bright and spikey, this record is much smoother and natural and my CD enjoyment of this album is still via vinyl if you see what I mean. This is a very fine copy, the record looks hardly played and sounds fantastic. And the cover has little to fault either, one that is more often seen very shabby. In the days when this was issued, covers did not include warnings on content, I guess if this was issued now it possibly would. Quite frankly, this has several tracks of smut-snigger sexual humour – but no-one did it better than Zappa – this is a brilliant set from the ultimate entertainer – I still miss this master musician more than words can say, and I can only thank his son Dweezil for keeping his father’s music alive. The last time I saw him at Cambridge (come back again soon), he played several songs from this album to the pleasure of the delighted audience.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this is the original matt finished example with no laminate or gloss sheen (they came later). A single format that was printed and made in England by Shorewood.

Cover – Front & Back: This is mostly seen very grubby and ringworn, but this bucks the trend and looks very clean and still fresh. Any grubbiness or marks are few and faint with just faint traces of rim impression. Barely any creasing bar the odd tiny one on a corner tip or two. Made to look like a bootleg quite deliberately, this quite basic cover will not be easy to find much better.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both straight with minimal traces of rubbing, being white any registers little anyway. A little darkened being critical and one quite small toned spot on the bottom.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Practically perfect with crisp neat shape retained. Solid, straight with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn with minimal traces of darkening.

Corners: All in very fine shape with any rub traces minor. The odd small tip crease with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: Deliberately basic, this cover had a message for those who chose to bootleg his music and any minor mild marks or grubbiness (of which there is little at all) simply blends in to add to the effect. Overall an impressive example and it should please most collectors. The plain white unlined inner is included with little to fault.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): this being very critical, side two even better and easily worthy of the extra (+). A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with just a few ultra fine and faint surface traces, mainly super-fine hairlines that have no effect on sound whatsoever. This will seldom be found a great deal better and should please most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: “What’s the secret word for tonight”, the famous opening to the ‘Mud Shark’, still one of the classic lines on any Zappa album and fondly remembered by his vast number of fans. This first full live album plays superbly with nothing of any real note to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted – a great pressing too. Way better than the CD version that I feel has been tweaked too much and sounds a little bright compared to the warmer sound of the vinyl. With a fair degree of dialogue and quiet passages, a clean pressing is crucial – this copy delivers. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been clearly well stored and little, and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this unique Zappa gem. Groupies and life on the road was the subject matter for this somewhat bawdy album. Clearly not one for the more sensitive listener, but for those with an open mind, this is unmissable. This record will prove difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. ‘Don’t forget to register to vote’ – FZ.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
