Description

Western Electric multi-frequency Test Record for calibrating broadcast transcription playback systems.  The condition of the disc is good, with signs that it has been used, but not abused.  The only real flaw I find is a small dent (see arrow in photo).  The dent is about 1/8-inch across and lies about 1/2-inch into the outer band on the lateral side.  The corresponding dimple on the vertical side is just outside the first groove.  Except for that small area of damage, the disc looks like it would still provide an excellent calibration reference, as well as being collectible.

Editorial comment: Many collectors of old-time radio transcription discs play them with the same RIAA equalization they would use for later LP records.  Lateral transcriptions like the Orthacoustic type come out sounding harsh and shrill; vertical transcriptions sound dull.  Using this disc with a VU meter or spectrum analyzer will clearly show the precise equalizer settings to adjust for the correct playback curve.
