Description

This is one the finest Mahler 8ths on record, and I think has only ever been available as CD on this now very rare, 2 disc set from Pickwick, released in 1992. This classic performance was recorded in 1973, following an acclaimed public concert by [pretty much] these forces at London's Royal Albert Hall in December 1972.

The recorded performance features Joyce Baker, Elizabeth Simon, Norma Burrowes, Joyce Blackham, Alfreda Hodgson, John Mitchinson, Raymond Myers and Gwynne Howell, with the New Philharmonia Chorus, Ambrosian Singers, Highgate School Choir, Bruckner-Mahler Choir of London, Finchley Childrens Music Group and The Orpington Junior Singers. Wyn Morris conducts his Symphonica of London.

This is a truly great and rare recording: generally glowing and measured, wonderfully played and sung, and captured  in majestic, detailed sound and with excellent notes including an English translation of the sung texts.
