DIRECT METAL MASTERING
STERLING LABS
INFO:

In the deadwax (run-out groove) of a vinyl record, DMM stands for Direct Metal Mastering.

It is a specialized vinyl lathe cutting technique developed in the early 1980s by Teldec (Telefunken-Decca) and Neumann in Germany.

How It Works & What It Means

• The Process: Instead of cutting the album's groove into a soft lacquer disc (the traditional method), the lathe cuts the groove directly into a thin layer of copper-plated steel.

• Audio Characteristics: DMM pressings are famous for precise high-frequency detail, lower surface noise, and bright, crisp sound. They also eliminate "groove echo" (pre-echo caused by adjacent grooves bleed-through on soft lacquer).

• Common Placement: You will typically see "DMM" machine-stamped or lightly hand-etched in the run-out groove near the matrix numbers, often accompanied by logos or stamps from mastering houses like Europadisk, Sterling, or Masterdisk.

Collector & Value Notes

• DMM became very popular in the mid-to-late 1980s across classical, audiophile jazz, and rock pressings.

• While praised for clarity and low noise, some audiophiles feel DMM cuts can sound slightly brighter or leaner in the low end compared to traditional lacquer cuts.

Great album

Climbin' the Walls is the debut studio album by American thrash metal band Wrathchild America (originally known simply as Wrathchild), released in 1989 on Atlantic Records.

Key Album Details

• Genre: Thrash Metal / Speed Metal / Progressive Metal

• Producer: Mark Dodson (known for his work with Anthrax and Suicidal Tendencies)

• Highlights: The album stood out in the late-'80s thrash scene for blending aggressive speed metal riffs with technical precision, complex song arrangements, and dark vocal harmonies.

Tracklist

Side A Side B 1. Climbin' the Walls 1. Hernia 2. Hell's Gates 2. No Deposit, No Return 3. No Exit 3. Hernia (Reprise) 4. London After Midnight 4. Day of the Dead 5. Silent Terror 5. Time

Collector & Vinyl Notes

• Original Pressings (1989): Released on Atlantic Records (Catalog # 81981-1). Late-'80s vinyl pressings had lower production numbers compared to CDs, making original vinyl copies moderately scarce.

• Market Value: Original US pressings in Very Good Plus (VG+) to Near Mint (NM) condition typically trade online for $35–$60, depending on whether it includes the original printed lyric inner sleeve.

• Deadwax Markings: Original US Atlantic pressings were typically cut at Masterdisk or Sterling Sound—look for machine-stamped signatures like MASTERDISK in the run-out groove.

I USE GOLDMINE RECORDS AS A GUIDE FOR GRADING: Still Sealed - SS

Mint - M - Perfect, never played, possibly still sealed.

Near Mint - NM - Nearly perfect. No obvious signs of wear, no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear, or other signs of slight handling. LP Jacket should have no creases, folds, seam splits, or cut-out holes.

Very Good Plus - VG+ or Excellent- Shows some signs that it was played, and handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. May show slight signs of wear, scuffs, or very light scratches that didn't affect the listening. Slight warps that do not affect the sound. Label may have some ring wear, or discoloration. Picture sleeves & LP inner sleeves may have slight ring wear, lightly turned-up corners, or a slight seam split. Jacket may have slight signs of wear, and may have a cut-hole.

Very Good -VG - Same as VG+, and may have surface noise, groove wear will be noticeable, and scratches that affect the sound. Labels may have writing, tape, or stickers.

Good Plus - G+ -Good - G- Will play without skipping and have significant surface noise, visible scratches, and groove wear. Jacket will have seam splits at the bottom, or the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear, or other defects.
