Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with any spindle marks quite light to very light, these being very fine and faint indeed and this looks very modestly played.

Cat Number: MDKS 8004.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. Above average and a very good but typical weight for this Decca pressed record.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Harder to find on the ‘dogbone’ style first label, pressed a number of times on various MCA formats, none seemed to be around long before being changed again. The ‘dogbones’ are the most prized as they are the earliest.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Second album from this legendary guitar-based rock band, most famed for their third classic release Argus. That is taking nothing away from this title, an excellent record in it’s own right and the title song is one of the very best songs they ever made. The line-up here again was: Andy Powell - guitar, vocals; Ted Turner - guitar, vocals; Martin Turner - bass, vocals and Steve Upton - drums. Never a stunning band vocally but, if guitar-driven rock was your thing, early Wishbone Ash rarely failed to deliver and this title has some stunning guitar interplay that truly thrills. With an early pressed ‘dogbone’ label record, pressed up to the highest standard by Decca and only lightly played inside a very strong, clean cover, this example delivers in every respect.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt finish. Printed in England by Robert Stace.

Cover Front: Magnificent and highly attractive with very fresh rich colour and hardly any real wear at all. Any rub traces or marks are tiny, few and very faint and seldomly does this front show up much better.

Cover Back: Largely the same as the front with the lack of ringwear particularly noteworthy. Any handling traces faint with just light rubs to the bottom corners encroaching into view. Both front and back are impressive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Virtually perfect.

Top Edges: Very light and faint, patchy rubs.

Bottom Edges: The front edge as per above, the back has a little more being more light+.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp to very sharp with barely any wear and no feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. One tiny tiny on the back and odd burr trace seen viewed end-on. Record enters on either edge as both are naturally open, no glue marks inside either.

Spine and Text: Solid and quite thick, mainly straight with very little compression or tilt. Folded square, both right edges meeting up very closely together and parallel. Some smallish scuffing to the bottom corner and one small rub to the top fold, all text is present and unworn. Some mild fading due to light expose over the years which this cover rarely seem to avoid.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs, most on the spine bottom as mentioned above. Most retain very fine to even excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A somewhat wear-prone cover, so nice to see a really early printed one in such fine all round condition. I feel sure this will please the majority of collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT(-): the Decca-style polylined inner is correctly date-coded 9-71, reitterating the earliness of this ‘dogbone’ label format copy. The lining is secure and clear seen through two near circle windows. All edges secure with wome lightish creases and mild glue darkening. A small tear on the top opening, this is UK patented and includes ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and arguably better still, a very fine visual copy and without doubt, only lightly played. Clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed, both playing surfaces show few marks at all. A tiny one near the start of side two (so small I had difficulty even finding it) emits a very brief few light clicks, the only ones of any note on the whole album that plays superbly. Visually a quality record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality Decca-pressed MCA record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault bar the brief, mild clicks near the start of side two. Strong, clear and focused sound and all the quality you would expect from a Decca-pressed record, for me the premier league of record manufacturers. The lack of surface noise and pops is always the best news and even the delicate intro to ‘The Pilgrim’ plays beautifully. So often these ultra fine grooves on this passage attract scratches, hence often ruined by numerous problems, but not this one. Great guitarwork as you would expect from this band at their best and I am sure the ‘dogbone’ label pressings always offer just the little bit extra in terms of fine detail. Nothing really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this great rock album. This copy will prove difficult to find substantially better and merits high recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
