Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only very light spindle marks, indeed side two has just a tiny faint couple. Although not a first issue, this is a super copy that plays with wonderful sound.

Cat Number: ILPS 9099.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 134 grams. Above average for its era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The first format pink pressings as per this are rare, make no mistake. The very first off the line sold in very small numbers and few would have been made and only bought by a very few adventurous listeners, few would have shelled out for a new name and a highly experimental album like this back in 1969. Hence I have no hesitation in offering this still early, superbly clean, little played and top quality pink rim pressing. Conditions are an important factor especially for this complex and intolerant recording. It does not tolerate well old heavy tracking equipment and any over-use or abuse on such. This is an exceptional recording that offers real high fidelity sound and sounds absolutely amazing in worthy systems. This cover by Island standard was a fairly basic effort and massively wear-prone. The very first were printed by E. J. Day, this second printing was by Robor, both wear the same – badly. Ringwear and rubbing is rife on most seen. Little-played early copies that still have a very decent cover and a record that plays to near perfection are hard to find. This was a joy to hear and this one includes a cover that does not need hiding away, a lovely all round example.

Brief Info: Without doubt one of the most advanced, daring and totally unique albums ever made. So far ahead in terms of technology and content, this elussive Island album still sounds advanced even today – some 40 years after issue. This is not a typical Island record: a label well known for progressive music but this album went far beyond ‘progressive’. For the curious who bought this one around issue time, well they must have wondered what they had let themselves in for. Music at this time consisted mostly of pop and blues-based rock, the beginning of the guitar-keyboard progressive era. The White Noise were a little different to say the least. Experimental electronic sounds, at time even mayhem. Full-throttle stereo pyrotechnics with use of sounds, as the cover states: that have never been heard before by humans. This record blends vocals, instrumentalists and complex electronic sound into a collage of entertainment. Some gentle moments too but some truly mind-warping originality that leave the senses reeling. At times tripping into the avant garde arena, not dissimilar to later pioneering electronic exponents and industrial bands. Side one includes very convincing frenzied orgasmic sounds juxaposing between speakers, very ahead of its time – this must have caused many a raised eyebrow for the unsuspecting listener way back. The title song lives up to its name with manic electronic screamed vocals and intensive percussion that will make the hair on the neck stand up – truly scary stuff, this is not a record for the faint hearted or regular pop music fan. Also female weeping sounds are used which are truly unnerving with an unsettling effect to the senses. This is real groundbreaking experimentalism, more the type of music heard on minor specialist labels. So who were the White Noise? Well they featured members of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, the people brought very much to the attention of Britain in the 60s and beyond with the theme music for ‘Dr Who’ – quite possibly the most famous and best TV theme ever – a classic piece that still sounds as brilliant now as it did then. They specialised in sound effects for television and radio themes. This a massively difficult record just to find on the original pink label so pink rim copies are often a viable alternative, and this is no compromise as there is little difference. So often these have the advantage of not been played on the groove-damaging early equipment. This vintage record is a roller-coaster ride of quiet passages and extreme sound. If this was played on less than worthy equipment or treated with less than due respect – and many would have been – this complex record would have been written-off very quickly. Even today’s modern equipment get a full workout from this album and to enjoy this one to maximum effect, play as loudly as possible or on a pair of quality speakers or headphones. Few copies will ever play perfectly with heavy crackle and distortion being rife on so many. Even the pink rim copies suffer just as badly and the cover is a nightmare too. This early pink rim copy plays superbly with anything unwanted tiny, minimal and faint. It actually includes a strong, little-worn cover which is equally difficult too. For those, the vast majority I would think, who did not experience The White Noise back in the late 60s, this is a fine chance to own what is a very fine all-round example.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high: a well-known fragile cover, this Robor printing is just slightly thicker than the Day ones, but the surface is no-less wear prone.

Cover Grade and Format: Near Excellent: more than justified on one of rock’s most uncompromising sleeves. A single format with no laminate protection. This was printed and made in England by Robor.

Cover Front: This really is one of the best front I have seen on this album for some time. The only minor rub traces are on the very edges or tip tips with odd minor tip crease. Clean, fresh with barely a hint of any rim mark and no creasing of any real note. Even handling marks are few and ultra faint, the overall lack of marks to the matt surface is good news and unusual.

Cover Back: This is again in great condition with only a very fine and faint ring mark near the left edge. Few will show less and many are seen with full circles of deep penetrating white. Very fine hairline spine edge creases and odd tip crease, but little else to fault and I really consider both main faces exceptional.

Top Edge: A mild and fine pressure rim rub near the centre, but is shows little has NOT split. One or two other fine rub traces and the corner tips too.

Bottom Edge: Only slight and light rubbing only, most towards the right side.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Thin and flimsy but any rubbing is small and light. A little has occurred on the ‘WH’ of ‘WHITE’, but most of the characters remain and all others present with few blemishes. A solid and mainly straight spine that has little compression.

Corners: All corners have rubbed but only mainly lightly, the tips on this rarely escape rubbing and creasing and overall these remain neat with fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: Everything about this cover has to be taken into perspective and one grading anything close to excellent is a very fine example indeed. When most are found falling apart and with ugly deeply penetrating ringwear and rubbing, tatty no text spines, large price sticker tears and edge splits, this somewhat brings one like this into perspective. This basic, but still quite attractive item should please most collectors but those who want a ‘perfect’ one will have to continue the difficult search.

The Inner Sleeve: This one has a plain white unlined inner. It has a small tear on the top opening edge but I prefer not to mix-and-match if at all possible. Other than that, it has little else to fault. Mildly aged with light discolour.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Excellent hardly does this justice but a very few fine hairlines are seen under light. Very clean, with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Complex groove patterns indicate real hi-fi sounds embedded within. A real minefield for any stylus to tackle, no wonder so many early copies are in shocking conditions. This copy looks only very lightly played, confirmed by superb overall sound. I feel sure this has not seen daylight for many years. Visually a super record that should please the majority of collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This groundbreaking record plays above its high visual grading. Very strong, distortion-free sound – a very important factor on this one – all frequencies are sharp and clear and this can never be taken for granted on this high intensity recording. Sound quality is at times is breathtaking with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This sounds like no other record I have ever heard before, a totally unique album. Any surface sounds are minimal, few and faint, just a tiny few ultra gentle ticks were briefly noted on side one, but so faint it’s almost ear-to-speaker cloth to notice them. No others were heard and these tiny few only just. Few of these will ever play without some blemishes, I think it’s near impossible. I can never imagine any copy of this playing silent but this record gives a superb account of itself overall with nothing offending my ears. It will take an extraordinary one to better this and I would more than delighted if all copies played this well. The music may frighten some off I hasten to add quickly, this is certainly way-out stuff and ‘Mojo’ magazine again included this title in its poll of ‘Most Out There’ albums of all time in 2005. At times mildly extreme and certainly ‘challenging’ but some ‘mellow’ moments too. The title song is a mind-blowing finale that leaves the senses numb. Awesome percussion with electronic mayhem, screams and stereo interplay – this is high intensity entertainment and the quaity of the production and engineering must be mentioned again. Few copies will outperform this early pink rim example significantly I feel sure – most will fall below and just finding the earlier copies will be difficult enough. Unless near silence is demanded, this should please most-all collectors. Time will take its toll of this intolerant cover and record (if abused by thick, heavy stylus). Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Any minuscule sound blemishes simply washed over me, I was far more into enjoying the music and its sonic delivery that leaves the CD version well behind. This will prove challenging to find significantly better in real terms and I know for certain, it will take a very special copy to better it significantly. It’s a copy I am happy to strongly recommend with some enthusiasm. I really love this album - one of Island less lauded treasures.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
