GEORGE SHEARING AND THE MONTGOMERY BROTHERS - For Wes Montgomery, a principal benefit of his rise to fame was that it allowed him to work at times with his two brothers. This tight-knit family unit had many fans, but none more enthusiastic than Shearing, who sat in whenever possible and eventually was able to join them on record. The result was this once-in-a-lifetime blending of the differing approaches of two master melodists.

MONTGOMERY BROTHERS - GROOVE YARD - As youngsters back in Indianapolis, the three Montgomerys learned to play together. Monk and Buddy, the oldest and youngest, left home first to gain 1950s fame as the core of “The Mastersounds”; a few years later, when Wes was beginning to set the jazz world on its ear, they were again able to work as a unit. It was not a very successful venture, commercially speaking, but their few recordings give off a most noticeable sense of the pride and pleasure these brothers felt in being reunited.

SO MUCH GUITAR - Wes Montgomery appeared as leader or co-leader on a dozen Riverside albums, in a wide variety of formats ranging from organ trios to one with full string orchestra. Some of the most rewarding simply placed him in a studio with a superior rhythm section and let him deal with a mixture of ballads, blues, and swingers. This album, his fourth for the label, is a notable example of this straightforward approach. It features the flawless support of Ron Carter (in one of his very first sessions) and Hank Jones, and includes Montgomery's only entirely unaccompanied recording: "While We're Young."

PORTRAIT OF WES - Wes Montgomery's last sessions for Riverside late in 1963 marked a return to the organ trio format he always enjoyed. But the results had not yet been issued when the company ceased operations. This LP released during a brief attempt to resume, was assembled without any input from either the artist or his producer. Thus the issued version of "Moanin'" was not one Wes liked and several liner credit errors went uncorrected [for example, the actual composer of "Lolita" is Barry Harris and the tune "Movin' Along" is an entirely different blues also written by Montgomery and later titled "Blues Riff"]. Nonetheless these are strong earthy performances in an always hard to find album that was only fleetingly available when originally issued. MOVIN ALONG - When this album was made, Wes Montgomery was in the early rocket-like stages of a tragically brief career. His debut as a recording artist on Riverside had not come until he was in his mid-thirties (and he was to die of a heart attack within a decade). In the single year between his first and this–his third–LP, he had leaped to the top of all possible polls. But he was always highly critical of his own recorded performances, and many feel his studio work never quite equaled his on-the-job accomplishments. However, this relaxed "blowing date" (his principal backing comes from a trio then working together as his friend Cannonball Adderley's rhythm section) is considered perhaps his most successfully swinging visit to a recording studio.

GUITAR ON THE GO - You hear music like this and you're not in the least surprised that, whatever he did before or afterward, Wes Montgomery never felt as much at home as when working this trio format. And they make you feel right at home with them, even now. The Wes Montgomery Trio makes most of what has passed for jazz in their time and beyond sound somewhere between self-congratulatory and shiftless. This group, almost as much as its guitarist and leader, was a blessing upon jazz.
