Label Conditions: Both immaculate: just a couple of tiny, very faint spindle traces on side one, side two has barely any at all. Very clean, fresh and attractive, this record without any doubt, has hardly ever been played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Rare: and way under-valued in the guides. When was the last time you saw this one? Not only that, this is in superb condition and offering perfect sound with an exceptional cover.

Brief Info: The second album by this short-lived six-piece band. This is a somewhat obscure and somewhat ‘lost’ concept prog gem, some band members have since distanced themselves from it – rather harshly I feel – was this due to the subject matter? An album that deals with various wars with a little brief narration in places. But this is a feast of jazzy-prog-rock with some full-on reed blowing, none better than on the opening song which is simply superb. The cover has some unsettlling war-related graphics and for such a fledgling band, this was an ambitious project that overall, works well. Issued on Trend Records, that were part of Polydor, both album and label are rare. This would have sunk without trace and been barely even noticed, somewhat unjustly so as they are clearly a talented unit with bags of promise. It almost has a Vertigo Spiral era look and feel to it, and for me, betters much on that collectable label. My first ever one of these, like most, this has totally eluded and bypassed me. For sure, I will never find a better one, and certainly one for those who enjoy this golden-era of progressive music.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): one small rear sticker mark off Mint(-). An unlaminated gatefold format. Printed and made in England by Howards.

Cover Front: The front is in superb condition with practically nothing to fault. A tiny few ultra fine and faint surface traces only seen under light and practically devoid of any creasing worthy of note. The artwork clean, fresh, vibrant and totally unfaded or aged. Rarely will this rare cover front be seen better.

Cover Back: The back is practically the same but does have a small sticker near the top right corner. A small surface semi-pull I think is right to call it, looks more like a scuff than a significant tear, it’s only small and has totally missed any text or any significant graphic area. All the huge positives like lack of rubbing, ringwear, creasing and grubbiness far outweight one light, small sticker mark that has minimal visual impact. Like the front, this will also be hard to find better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Minor friction rubs near the edges that few will ever escape, that apart, noting else to fault. Some graphic images of war are seen here.

Top Edges: Both show barely any wear at all.

Bottom Edges: Some moderately light rubbing near the ends, little elsewhere. Being the resting edges, these will seldom be seen better either.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both clean, sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on the back edge, the front being fully sealed.

Spine and Text: Little short of perfect and how many spines like this ever will be? Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and the artwork little short of pristine and as clean as when printed.

Corners: The spine pair are exceptional with barely any traces of rubbing and retaing superb crisp shape. The top right have tiny tip rubs only and also retain super shape. The bottom right have more moderate tip rubs and slightly thickened, even this pair have fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very rare and obviously wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. As stated, this looks very ‘Vertigo’, the style is very familiar in all aspects. This incredibly fresh looking item should please most-all collectors. If the small rear sticker mark is an issue however, do not bid.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a Polydor-style lined inner that had two crisp and sharp window circles and solid clear lining. A little aged with the usual seam glue darkening but not less than moderate on this one. All edges secure with no repairs and hardly any creasing. The retailed wrote Philips 6480001 on the front bottom right corner area - emphasising this is the real and genuine one that came with it. Further proof is the date code which is 1070.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace blemishes being tiny, few and very faint indeed, seen critically under light. Visually a super record that should please mos-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive and somewhat ‘lost’ prog record plays up to it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. With some complex sounds from the rasping reeds, this will test out any unworthy copy, but not problems here, this is fully focused and precise and simply sounds fantastic. Few copies will match or outperform this earliest pressing I feel sure. I would imagine few of these were even pressed and fewer even sold, the Trend label is only a small subsidiary of the giant parent label and not seen often either. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, this being my first ever example on any format. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, a rare opportunity for sure.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
