Powerhouse organist Walter Wanderley defies convention with his trio release Cheganca. Most jazz listeners would assume Wanderley would not want to hold down the fort without another tonal instrument in the lineup. In this case, he chooses to fill out his trio with a drum set player and auxiliary percussionist, forgoing bass or guitar entirely. He doesn't need to help harmonically, and he's all set melodically. Just that supple, confident Brazilian groove, expertly performed by percussionists Bobby Rosengarden and Sol Gubin, and Wanderley is ready to cook. With repertoire choices that most modern-day jazz aficionados would find familiar, either because they were classics at the time or because Wanderley's rendition made them such, like "Agua de Beber" or "Here's That Rainy Day," Cheganca would be a welcome addition to any bossa nova fan's collection. The fat, swinging sound of this surprisingly small combo is a marvel even by modern standards. Alongside organ giants like Jimmy Smith or today's Joey DeFrancesco, Wanderley will go down in history as one of the instrument's champions.

(b)          The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

COVER IS (WEAK) NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has three corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine 

-         The cover has a distinct S-shaped, pressure-type cutout stamp. This type of cutout marking was used exclusively by MGM and Verve labels and was more discreet and sensitive than the other types of marking (such as cutout holes or drill marks), as it did not require the cover to be damaged.

-         Cover has all four corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-        The gatefold cover has partially split seams on 1 out of 4 "legs" of the cover (about 2 inches / 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters).
