The best part of his career was spent presenting as a supper club undesirable with a surprise talent behind the gruff; American singer-songwriter Tom Waits made no exception with Small Change, 1976. This was the first to see him step into his boozy, spoken-word-slurring own, after a more conventional start as a songwriter (first came the folky Closing Time, then the jazzy but not quite so atmospheric Heart Of Saturday Night, two years previous to this). Recorded in just five nights to stereo tape, it strips everything back to the wee small hours, hearing the voice of Waits, we imagine wasted, backed by almost nothing but his lowball-topped piano, lyrics drawing on unsurprising influences like Raymond Chandler and Charles Bukowski.
