Description

This is an auction for a rare box set, Wagner, Das Rheingold, Solti, Vienna Philharmonic.

This was released by Decca records in 1959 and has catalogue number SXL2101/2/3.  This is the 1st pressing with a groove running the circumference of the label, also known as WBg, wide band grooved. This is stereophonic. Please check the pictures for clarification.

Condition: The box comes in superb condition with only three small buff marks seen on the bottom edge and very light buffing to the corners. Otherwise it is hard to fault, the corners are not flared or split indicating this has been stored with no weight on it. The picture on the front is just about perfect with perhaps a couple of tiny marks only. The spine is like new, the hinge is perfect with no wear, the rear of the box is fine with only one tiny buff mark seen on the bottom right corner, no discolouring on this, no dusting to the box. The inside has a few light brown spots seen on the white plain surface, otherwise the inside is as new. Please check the pictures, a superb box and as good as you can find this 50+ year old set.

This also comes with its original booklet which has a few very light brown spots to the outside pages but is otherwise as new, nice crisp pages, perfect hinge and showing plenty of resistance, pointing to the fact this has probably not been opened fully.

This also comes with its three original 'Decca FFSS' inner sleeves which have a little corner creasing but are otherwise superb, no discolouring or edge splits.

All labels look immaculate and brand new, Under closer examination I can see perhaps one or two tiny spindle trails, at the most, on each side. The centre hole is perfect on all sides and shows no signs of wear, Superb labels and as good as they get.

The vinyl retains its brand new shine and looks immaculate, Under a strong light most sides look brand new and flawless, a couple of sides have some very, very faint and non-audible light ghost marks. These look like the kind of marks possibly caused if placing or removing the vinyl from the sleeve with out an inner sleeve. Although that said, after finding the same fault on several of the classical records I am now listing, which all have there original immaculate polythene lined inners, I am now starting to think that the marks have infact been caused by the vinyl being housed in the plastic lined inner sleeves which with a little compression and 50 years or so of time have left these very light marks.  In anycase these are completely non-audible and as stated only seen under the closest of examinations. Superb, strong, loud and clear audio. Playing with no lessening in sound quality and other than the very occasional quiet crackle these sound brand new. I suspect the occasional very quiet crackle heard has been there since the time of pressing and this sounds as good as it gets. Certainly not suffering any reduction in sound quality due to wear and playing with no distortion, fading or dragging heard whatsoever. Simply superb and graded at a strict Near Mint.

Superb box, superb inners, fine booklet- Complete, played once or twice at the most, superb labels, fantastic audio, fine looking and a true collectors item.
