Description
This is an original 1963 45 RPM pressing of “From Me To You” backed with “Thank You Girl” by the Beatles. Vee Jay catalog number VJ 522. It’s the glossy colorband label with oval logo.
Vee Jay Records of Chicago released this 45 in May 1963 after Capitol Records turned it down. It didn’t sell well, only getting to #116 on the Billboard “Bubbling Under” chart. When Capitol started promoting the heck out of “I Want To Hold Your Hand” in January ‘64, Vee Jay reissued all the Beatles material they held the rights to, but “From Me To You” got a different flip side and different catalog number. That’s why this particular pressing is so rare. The book value for a mint copy is between $700 and $1000.
This isn’t a mint copy. It looks nice. The label is in good shape. A lot of fingerprints on it, but it’s still got the gloss, very little scuffing (the worst is above the L in “Thank You Girl”), and only one real scratch in it (over the matrix number on “From Me To You”). The playing surface also looks nice, with only very light scratches. Visually, it looks like a strong VG+. You can get a closer look here and here.
Playing it is another story. It’s got a lot of groove wear, giving it a very gritty sound. Here’s a short excerpt on MP3. Both sides are in the same state.
So yes, it could sound much better, but I assume you have these tracks on something else, right? And visually, it’s a pretty record. Consider this an opportunity to own a very rare Beatles record at a discount price.
$7 gets you insured shipping in meticulous (bordering on paranoid) packaging. Good luck!
For those who are interested in such things, this is a West Coast pressing, pressed on styrene by Monarch Record Mfg. of Los Angeles. Trailoff grooves have Monarch’s MR in a circle, the delta number (47843), an AudioMatrix logo, and the letters RA (I don’t know what that means) in addition to the matrix numbers.
