I grade conservatively using the Goldmine grading scale. There is no such thing as a "mint" record, near mint (NM) is my highest grade. Grades are a visual representation of the playing surfaces.
NM > VG++/EX > VG+ > VG > VG- > G+ > Good > Poor
NM - Playing surfaces will look new with no signs of mishandling. Possibly unplayed.
VG++ or EX - At most a few minor imperfections that have little to no effect on play. Possibly unplayed as well. Sometimes called Excellent.
VG+ - Still a great-looking record with slightly more imperfections that may add some background noise in parts.
VG - Even more imperfections that may add some background noise in parts.
VG-/G+/G/P - I won't sell too many LPs that fall into these grades, but there will be a progression downwards from VG depending upon the severity of the damage. These LPs will be play-tested at least in part to ensure they don't skip.
Sometimes the two sides of a record will grade differently. I will grade it accordingly in those situations, e.g. if side 1 is VG++ & side 2 is VG+ I would mark it VG++/VG+.
Covers follow the same grading scale.
