Description
Glenn Gould and Albert Pratz on violin play: Alban Berg's Piano Sonata op.1, Shostakovitch's Three Fantastic Dances, Taneieff's The Birth of the harp, Prokofieff's The Winter Fairy. This is the very first Glenn Gould recording in 1953 and it is a great rarity.
This copy is signed by Glenn Gould! ''To Dr. Defauw - with appreciation for an inspiring performance - Very sincerely - Glenn''.
I have consulted an expert on Glenn Gould to authenticate the signature, and there is no doubt in his mind that the signature is very legit. This is definitely the young GG’s handwriting (please see scan).
A little background on ''Dr. Defauw'': The Dr. Defauw is in fact Desire Defauw who was a conductor mostly for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the '40s, but he was also frequently invited to conduct in Montreal in the early '50s. Glenn Gould did know Defauw as a young man, and performed with him at least once, on December 14 or 15, 1954, in Montreal (the Beethoven First); that was in fact GG’s orchestral debut in Montreal. The Hallmark album was fairly new at that time, so GG gave it to Defauw as a gift on that occasion, as the inscription suggests. When Defauw went to Belgium, he left his LP collection (the vast majority being 78rpm) to a friend of his in Montreal. I obtained the copy from the sister of the friend.
The jacket is still VG++/NM, no broken seam or disc wear. I would rate the LP as VG. It has marks, but it plays through without skipping. The label has no spindle mark. Pressed in Canada for Hallmark # RS 3 (10'').
I have put a very reasonable reserve price on this item.
