Description

This is a Who rarity for fans and collectors.

This novelty collectors’ item  was obviously a special treat for any Who fan and comes complete with their third album release ‘The Who Sell Out’.

It is rare fold out which was meant as a special gift for a special person  more than 50 years ago.

The album itself comes inside a thick cardboard  ‘folder’ made from white board and hinged down the middle.

Firstly, the outside wrapper:  this personal gift arrived in a brown paper gift wrapper, with a giant address, printed stamp and 4d postmark - in this case it was addressed to one very lucky Who lady! The stamp mark states ‘ Happy 21st Birthday 68” - the late recipient of this gift was 21 in 1968.

the brown wrapper has been opened down two sides, but is still intact down two, and allows the hinged album folder to be taken in and out. It measures 38cm wide and 43cm high.

The white folder has the words ‘Advertisment’ on the front cover and inside which makes me think this item could have been sold from outside the UK due to the spelling. On the front cover it states in black type:

‘Sent only to consenting adults in brown envelope’ and to continue the joke there is a brown envelope stuck on the card measuring 23x10cm. This opens and inside is a colour photo which unfolds to 21cm and shows a reclining lady but only for consenting adults!

The back cover is blank white.

The unfolding centre has the Who’s third album ’The Who Sell Out’ stuck on the left hand side with paper corners. There are words in black type: “Who would send such a BIG 21st Card”.  On the right are also a number of floating balloons.

On the right hand side is a purple and brown velvet pouch on a piece of string stuck to the cardboard - inside the pouch is a small printed face.

Inside the album cover there is a psychedelic poster measuring 76cm x 51cm and there is a small sticker on the album which states free Psychedelic poster inside.

As stated, this is a rare novelty item which I have not seen listed anywhere else.

There is one big disappointment. The vinyl album itself was looking like a near mint copy BUT CATASTROPHE: on Side 1 there is a 1cm long very feint scratch, on Side 2 there are two deeper scratches. This is such a shame as the disk looks hardly played and there is a very small number of spindle marks on the two centres. It is believed to nee a first pressing

The cover is well known and shows each of the four band members in turn in comical set up - see photos. The cover is in good condition, the spine is excellent, the inside envelope has creases on corners but fairly clean.

The album is on Track Records and on the back cover it states the number 612002 MONO. On the album itself the number is etched: Side 1 :  613002 A triangle 2 and on Side 2 : 613002 B triangle 1.

It is a great shame that this album has these three scratches as its was otherwise a fantastic copy.

Neveretheless, I am expecting that this item will attract great attention from Who fans as it is rare - perhaps only a one off that is remaining? -  It is a wonderful addition to any Who collection - and make a great Christmas present.

THIS ITEM WILL ONLY BE SOLD IN THE UK - PLEASE DO NOT BID IF YOU ARE OUTSIDE OF THE UK.

I am also selling a mint copy - no scratches - of the Who’s first album from 1965 My Generation which will be listed soon. This also has a novelty cover but this time home made and much smaller scale - it will sell well because of its condition.
