This famous 2-LP set features three live versions of the Velvet Underground's landmark "Sister Ray." While the studio version is famous for its lengthy running time (17 minutes), the song as originally composed actually ran for nearly a full hour. The first 40 minutes or so were performed without drums (with Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison on electric guitars, John Cale on viola and Mo Tucker on bass), with Cale and Tucker switching to keyboards and drums, respectively, for the remainder. Sides 1 and 2 of this album contain a rare recording of the drum-less section of the song (it fades out just as the electric portion begins). Sides 3 and 4 present two live performances of the song, featuring the post-Cale line-up of Reed, Morrison, Tucker, and Doug Yule.
Please be aware that all three performances are off-line recordings, meaning they were recorded on portable equipment by audience members and/or friends of the band. The sound quality is very obviously not up to professional standards, although all three performances are certainly listenable and enjoyable. The LP and sleeve are both in Very Good condition.
No serious V.U. fan's collection is complete without this set!
