Sacred Bones Records has been rifling through the vaults of legendary Suicide frontman Alan Vega, who sadly passed away back in 2016. As a result, they've discovered a swathe of unreleased albums, of which Mutator is the first to be released. It was recorded by Vega and long-time collaborator Liz Lamere in 1995 and '96 but was never finalized or mixed. With a little help from fellow Vega collaborator Jared Artaud, Lamere has finally finished it, revealing an unusual but hugely attractive set that combines Vega's distinctly poetic vocals with alien-sounding electronics, unsettling ambient tones, industrial funk grooves and stuttering drum machine beats. The result is an inspired, off-kilter treat.
