Description

Chess Records was an American record company established in 1950 in Chicago, specializing in blues and rhythm and blues. It was the successor to Aristocrat Records, founded in 1947. It expanded into soul music, gospel music, early rock and roll, and jazz and comedy recordings, released on the Chess and its subsidiary labels Checker and Argo/Cadet. The Chess catalogue is owned by Universal Music Group and managed by Geffen Records and Universal Music Enterprises.  Established and run by two Jewish immigrant brothers from what was then Poland, Leonard and Phil Chess, the company produced and released many singles and albums regarded as central to the rock music canon. The musician and critic Cub Koda described Chess as "America's greatest blues label".  The album up for sale is a 1987 release on the Chess label and was manufactured by MCA Records under license to Columbia House as a "club edition".  It consists of 20 tracks over two seperate LP's.  The tracks on this album are original recordings by Muddy Waters, Robert Nighthawk, Eddie Boyd & the Chess Men, Willie Mabon, Lowell Fulson, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter & His Night Cats, J.B. Lenoir, Jimmy Rogers, Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson, Otis Rush, Buddie Guy, John Lee Hooker, Etta James, Little Milton and Koko Taylor.  The album has a run time of 60+ minutes.  The cover is in EX condition with very few faults. There is a faint sign of disc wear on the lower front cover.  All covers are shiny with no markings, split seams or wear along the edges and corners.  The back cover contains track listings with original release information.  The interior covers of this gatefold album contain liner note by Don Snowden regarding the history of Chess Blues, along with photos of the artist included on these recordings.  The paper inner sleeves are original and intact.  However, the sleeves are generic with no photos or graphics. The recordings  have been cleaned and tested using Audacity and are free of "skips" and there is no background noise.  The sound is strong and clean.  All record surfaces are free of scratches and scuffs and show no significant wear.  I am the original owner of this release and can attest to its limited number of plays (less than 5).  All labels are clean and intact.  This recording looks and sounds like it just left the record shop and by Goldmine standards would rate VG+/EX.

I always clean, listen and test every record using Audacity that I list on EBAY. I do this in insure that I can give as accurate a description for each album I list. I also try to follow the Goldmine standards on grading records. I do this as a service to the buyer, as well as, to maintain my own reputation.
