The soundtrack to Cameron Crowe's Rock'n'Roll epic is definitely good enough to justify a classy vinyl release: from the Who to the Beach Boys, from Simon & Garfunkel to Yes, the Seeds to David Bowie (just to name a few) a multifaceted picture of that era is projected. But Classic Records made a lot more of it: not only that a concert poster of the fictional film band Stillwater is enclosed (and about every third copy a small prop of the film, such as a backstage pass or a ticket). The really remarkable thing is the fourth page of the set: It contains a total of six Stillwater songs (to my knowledge, the CD edition is only one). And that stuff sounds outrageously authentic. Almost one is inclined to believe in the existence of the illustrated on the inner cover other 3 Stillwater LPs ... The limitation is this time much stricter than usual: 2500 copies are it, hand numbered. (2001)

Der Soundtrack zu Cameron Crowes Rock’n’Roll-Epos ist auf jeden Fall gut genug, um eine edle Vinylausgabe zu rechtfertigen: Von den Who bis zu den Beach Boys, von Simon & Garfunkel bis Yes, den Seeds zu David Bowie (um nur ein paar zu nennen) wird ein facettenreiches Bild jener Ära projiziert. Classic Records hat aber noch viel mehr daraus gemacht: Nicht nur, daß ein Konzertplakat der fiktiven Film-Band Stillwater beiliegt (und ungefähr jedem dritten Exemplar eine kleine Requisite des Films, etwa ein Backstage-Pass oder eine Eintrittskarte). Das wirklich bemerkenswerte ist die vierte Seite des Sets: Die enthält nämlich ganze 6 Stillwater-Songs (auf der CD-Ausgabe ist meines Wissens nur einer). Und das Zeug klingt geradezu unverschämt authentisch. Fast ist man geneigt, an die Existenz der auf dem Innencover abgebildeten anderen 3 Stillwater-LPs zu glauben… Die Limitierung ist diesmal deutlich strenger als sonst: 2500 Exemplare sind’s, handnumeriert. „Rock’n’Roll“, sagt Stillwater-Gitarrist Russell Hammond auf die Frage des jugendlichen Musik-Journalisten William Miller, „Rock’n’Roll ist eine Lebensanschauung und Denkweise.“ In der Tat, Russell und seine drei Mitstreiter Larry Fellows, Ed Vallencourt und Sänger Jeff Bebe, leben den Rock’n’Roll der frühen 70er Jahre, erleben einen ziemlich steilen Aufstieg von den unbestrittenen Lokalmatadoren im Grenzstaat Michigan zur Vorgruppe von Grössen wie Black Sabbath und den Allman Brothers, schaffen es nach New York und aufs Titelblatt des „Rolling Stone“-Magazins, ehe sie sich – almost famous, fast berühmt – im Band-Konflikt zwischen Sänger Jeff und Gitarrist Russell um die Rolle des Frontmanns zugrunde richten. Die Geschichte der Band und jene des 15-jährigen William Miller, der Stillwater auf Tournee begleitet und zu ihrem Chronisten wird, erzählt Regisseur Cameron Crowe in seinem grossen, autobiographisch geprägten Film „Almoust Famous“. Er hatte selber noch zur Schulzeit für „Rolling Stone“ geschrieben und in der Figur seines William viel eigene Erfahrungen, Kenntnisse und Ein-Sichten verarbeitet. „Almoust Famous“ ist viel, und dies konsequent und meisterhaft: ein Road Movie von einer Band auf ihrer „Almoust Famous“-Tour im Band-Bus durch die USA; eine Tragikomödie über das Lebensgefühl der frühen 70er im Umfeld einer Band mit Groupies, Sex and Drugs and Rock’n’Roll, Neid, Zwist und Versöhnung; eine Initiationsgeschichte eines Jugendlichen am Übergang ins Erwachsenenleben mit der Loslösung von einer liebend-besorgten Mutter – und ein witzig-bissig liebevoll-ironischer Film voller Musik, mit ganz starken Darstellern und einem ganz starken Soundtrack.In dessen Mittelpunkt steht die Musik von Stillwater, Konzertausschnitte, mit jenem grandiosen „Fever Dog“, mit dem sie den Durchbruch geschafft und die Charts gestürmt hatten. Elton Johns rühriges „Tiny Dancer“ etwa, das anklingt, als die Band und ihre Groupies nach einem gewaltigen Streit zerknirscht im Bus hängt und einer um die andere zögernd einzustimmen beginnt, bis alle – über die Musik wieder ein Herz und eine Seele – aus voller Kehle mitröhren. Gewaltig. Oder wie hatte Williams ältere Schwester gesagt, als sie (zu The Who’s „Sparks“) rebellierend die Wohnung der Mutter ver- und ihrem Bruder einen Stapel Platten hinterliess: „Hör dir ‚Tommy’ bei Kerzenschein an, und du wirst deine Zukunft erkennen.“ Umgekehrt gesagt: Hör dir den Soundtrack von „Almoust Famous“ an, und du hörst eine grandiose Vergangenheit nachklingen...........................
