Description
Alternative rock has been around for many decades now, but began being popular in the late 80s and 90s. It's an umbrella term used to describe music that's not regularly played on pop radio, and a lot of times it's bands that aren't successful. That doesn't always mean that these aren't good bands, it's just that most of them do not conform to pop music's norms and standards, and usually do not sell out. Usually! With that said, alternative rock has had some strange and wild bands through the years in that genre of music...
Today's rockin' good deal is a SIX pack of alternative bands from the 80s, the 90s, and the 2020s. First up is a band called The Happy Fits, an alternative (or indie) rock band from New Jersey. In 2020, the band released a very cool 7" picture disc with three songs on it, made to look like a grapefruit slice. And it looks real! This comes in its original PVC jacket with hype sticker. Bought new, and never opened it or played it!
Next we go back almost THIRTY years ago, and feature American alternative rockers Sponge, and their big hit "Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain)", and on a yellowish marigold colored vinyl 7"! From their 1994 album 'Rotting Piñata', and released in '95. This also comes with its original PVC sleeve with the band name printed on it, and a hype sticker. Looking really good, and may never have been played. (I never played it, but it's possible someone else has. I don't remember when and where I bought this! Lol)
Then we move on to a band named Amber Asylum, and their 7" picture disc for the single "Looking Glass", and an 'Alice in Wonderland' theme! Amber Asylum is an all female San Francisco based alternative band, specializing in experimental/darkwave/dream pop/neoclassical music. The B side is the song "Poppies". Taken from the 1997 album 'The Natural Philosophy of Love'. This comes in a clear generic PVC jacket.
Next we have a two track sawblade shaped 7" single, featuring a track by a band called Prime Sinister, and another band named The Bevis Frond. Prime Sinister's song is called "Images". They are an alternative band from Germany. The flip side is a track by Bevis Frond, called "Sociopath". The Bevis Frond is a psychedelic alternative band from London. This is a cool looking black and red splatter sawblade 7", released in 1995, and in its original jacket!
Then there's Ash, an alternative rock band from Ireland. The 7" for the song "Goldfinger" was released on clear vinyl with silver glitter embedded in it! This originally came in a picture sleeve, that's no longer available (so it will come in a clear and generic PVC sleeve). From the album '1977', released in 1996. Ummm...what? Lol This looks great, and is shiny and clean, but there's a small black speck that is in the vinyl itself. Looks like it's from the manufacturing process. Still, a nice collectible record to have!
We'll end with The Plastmatics. The punk, metal, and alternative band featuring Wendy O. Williams on lead vocals. Wendy sang a duet with Lemmy from Motörhead (and Hawkwind), recording the vintage classic country and western Tammy Wynette hit "Stand By Your Man". The band Kiss took the Plasmatics on tour with them in '82. Wendy led The Plasmatics until 1984, when she released her first solo record (produced by Gene Simmons of Kiss). By 1998, she took her own life...
(RIP Wendy O. You were one the wildest and craziest punk rockers to have ever existed. People who really knew you loved you. Even being the high priestess of punk and metal, you had a gentle and loving heart. You are missed!)
The Plasmatics are represented here today with a rare colored vinyl 7" from their 1980 debut album called 'New Hope for the Wretched' and the single "Monkey Suit". Backed with the live version of the song "Squirm". Red and copper/gold splatter vinyl. You see colored vinyl like this quite a bit these days, but not so much in 1980! The record itself doesn't look bad, at all. Jacket is showing signs of wear, but still intact.
