Shigeru Umebayashi is a name only some cinephiles will recognise, but many more should get to know. Once a member of the Japanese new wave rock band EX, he has been scoring film and television since 1985, and lays claim to no less than 30 movie credits. These include House of Flying Daggers and the iconic romantic drama, In the Mood for Love.

You can add to that list 2046, sequel to In the Mood and Days of Being Wild. In our opinion, this is the strongest of those soundtracks, and probably one of the finest examples of musical curation for visuals we have ever come across. From jazz to croon, tense orchestral to sparse, mournful strings, it quite literally has it all, and while Umebayashi didn't make everything here (you'll also find the likes of Dean Martin, Georges Delerue, and Nat King Cole), his original pieces make it what it is.
