Van Halen's tenth album Balance arrived in January 1995, closing a chapter for the band, with Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony both makling their last appearances for US rock giants. Recorded mostly at Eddie Van Halen's 5150 Studios in Studio City, with final vocal takes cut in Vancouver, the album leans into darker territory than previous outings. 'The Seventh Seal' draws on Eddie's early sobriety and spiritual introspection, opening with chanting monks and vast guitar walls. Elsewhere, 'Can't Stop Lovin' You' revisits Hagar's divorce, while 'Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)' channels grief over fellow phenom Kurt Cobain. Three instrumentals scatter through the tracklist: Eddie's hacked piano experiment 'Strung Out', the Beck-ish 'Baluchitherium', and Alex's percussive interlude 'Doin' Time'. Balance was remastered in 2023 but is reissued again here with live Wembley material.
