Van Halen pushed into darker territory on their tenth studio album, Balance, the last with Sammy Hagar on vocals and the final full-length with bassist Michael Anthony. Mostly recorded at Eddie Van Halen's 5150 Studios in Studio City, with five vocal tracks laid down in Vancouver under producer Bruce Fairbairn, the album integrates Eddie's guitar and keyboard work across three instrumentals. The opening track, 'The Seventh Seal', layers chanting monks with U2-like guitar walls, while ballads like 'Can't Stop Lovin' You' revisit Hagar's melodic instincts. Socially minded 'Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)' and riff-driven 'Amsterdam' illustrate the band's range. Balance reached number one on the Billboard 200, went triple platinum, and was remastered in 2023 as part of The Collection II, which hears its lattermost expanded sub-edition include a scarcely documented 1995 Wembley rendition included this 2025.
