description:
Excellent and rare early electronic pieces from the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. Wireless Fantasy is a stunning musique concrete piece made out of recordings of historic early radio transmission devices. The Concerted Piece For Tape Recorder And Orchestra is among the first to combine electronics with orchestra and is performed by the Oslo Philharmonic conducted by Jose Serebrier. The lesser known electronic and avant garde works by jazz-pianist-turned-experimental-composer Powell round out the album nicely.
artist info from album notes etc.:
Ussachevsky was born a Russian-Manchurian prince but fled to the US after the communist revolution; while teaching at Columbia he was placed in charge of maintaining their newly acquired tape recorder, which he began experimenting with as a compositional tool in the early 1950s. He was influenced by Edgard Varese and Roger Sessions, taught Charles Wuorinen and Ilhan Mimaroglu, and co-founded the Columbia Princeton Electronic Music Center where he pioneered electronic music along with Luening, Bulent Arel, Milton Babbitt, and Mario Davidovsky. • Luening was a flutist and electro-acoustic composer who studied under Jarnach, Andreae, and Busoni; he taught Charles Dodge, Charles Wuorinen, and John Corigliano, co-founded the revered CRI record label, and pioneered early electronic music with Ussachevsky at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. Ussachevsky and Luening, along with John Cage, Earle Brown, Raymond Scott, etc., were among the first Americans to experiment with electronics in the 50s and 60s; their work parallels that of other early musique concrete/tape music composers like Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Bernard Parmegiani, Francois Bernard Mache, Francois Bayle, Tod Dockstader, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Herbert Eimert, Rune Lindblad, Dick Raaijmakers, Tom Dissevelt, Henk Badings, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. • Mel Powell started off as a jazz pianist and arranger working with Benny Goodman, Raymond Scott, Muggsy Spanier, Bobby Hackett, and Glenn Miller, then studied under Paul Hindemith and became a serialist composer, working on early synthesizers at the legendary Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center.

Packing I pack professionally and with the utmost care drawn from years of experience trading vinyl internationally. I use new record mailers which I have determined are the best and most protective, reinforced with cardboard inserts and bubble wrap padding. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves and with the vinyl outside of the cover to prevent damage. All packages are completely sealed with strong packing tape covering all openings. Unless requested, no paper invoice is included in the package, both to save trees and to avoid customs difficulties. If you'd like your package done any differently, just let me know.
Payment I accept Paypal (which allows for fastest possible shipment). Please email with any payment questions. If you are paying by Paypal and have won multiple items, please use a single Paypal payment. I will send an eBay invoice to winners shortly after my auctions close, and an email after payment has been received to confirm item shipment.
