CORLIS DEES OBITUARY
CORLIS L. DEES SR. died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005. Born March 16, 1920, in Lucky, La., he was the son of Cornelius O. Dees and Clara (Green) Dees Scott. He married Lena Marvelle Mott on Sept. 20, 1942, and she survives. Other survivors include two sons, Corlis L. (wife, Datha) Dees of Shelbyville and Reginald C. (wife; Frances) Dees of Spring, Texas. He was preceded in death by one brother, Elton Deas. At the age of 17, the Rev. Dees received his call to gospel ministry, which spanned a period of 65 years. In 1943 he and his wife accepted the pastorate of a small congregation in Conroe, Texas. From 1946 to 1959, he worked in Liberty, Texas, and Cleveland, Texas. where he built two new congregations and oversaw the construction of two church buildings. In 1959, he accepted appointment as pastor of lrvington Pentecostal Church, also known as Christian World Center, located at 305 Weiss St., Houston, Texas. Dees then became district presbyter of Section I, United Pentecostal Church-Texas District. He served the district as a board member for 18 years. Through his leadership, tie first UPC African-American, Latino and Asian churches were established in Houston. Dees championed the formation of singles minisiry both in Houston as well as the nation and initiated Metro Evangelism. He founded and was president of Irvington Christian Academy, which became the model parochial school and was recognized by Newsweek and Time magazines. The Rev. Dees was a recognized lobbyist at the Texas State Capital for the Pentecostal faith, Christian education and private schools. He was a founding instructor for the Texas Bible College in Houston and served on the National Home Mission's Commission for evangelism. He served as a presiding officer of Judicial procedure for the United Pentecostal Church lnternational. He and his wife traveled the continents, ministering in Asia, Africa. Europe, the Middle East, South America, Mexico and Canada. The Rev, Dees authored several books and manuscripts. He held a master's degree in Christian psychology and a doctorate in theology.
