Chance 1110 by John Lee Booker: I Love To Boogie b/w Graveyard Blues. Recorded 1951, issued 1952. Rare Chance 45 from this early in the labels history, and the fidelity is excellent! A quality pressing. Very little pressing hiss.

 Recorded in Detroit in 1951, most probably by Joe Von Battle, which would account for the quality of the recording, and issued by Chance in 1952. John Lee Hooker playing solo guitar and singing in top form on both sides, with menacing percussive chord strumming, abrupt stops and starts, stinging single notes decaying into oblivion, and stunning rhythm turnarounds obeying the eccentric, hypnotic rules of Hooker's personal timekeeping. The casual listener might lose the beat, but the discerning blues collector will hear Hooker never losing the beat, using it hypnotically, percussively, trying to wear it out, always coming back to it, stabbing a jagged chord into it's heart to kill it and get the recording in under 3 minutes.

Here we are In 2013 and this 45 is almost impossibly rare to find. Labels are very clean with a push mark on one side. The vinyl is very clean, with little play. However there is a 3/8ths inch wide, narrow edge burn in the same place on both sides, with the greater part of the damage in the leadin deadwax, although it does extend into the grooves Please see the pics. This 45 plays through fine, with no skips, jumps, or locked grooves. Plays like a champion in fact, far better than it looks. The heat damage is audible for about the first 15 turns, but not overly distracting, while the music is very strong over top of it.  Please listen to the sound clips, which were recorded on an Audio Technica 120 turntable with a new Shure cartridge, tracking at 2.5 grams. Record labels grade NM, with some very light wear. Vinyl area without heat damage grades a beautiful VG++. The edge burn brings down the overall grade to VG+. If this were almost any other record, we collectors would all ignore it, or pay a minimum for it, because of the way the heat damage looks. But this is not just any record, it's the  iconic bluesman John Lee Hooker on the iconic Chance label, on a 45 no less! 78 copies turn up maybe about every 2 years, but a 45?  This came out in early 1952. The people who bought these kinds of blues records back then for house rent parties, living room dances, or jukebox stock for the juke joint? They were still using 78s. The 45 microgroove recording was brand new, dating back only 2 years, introduced in late 1949.  Who had the new 45 players to play this among the juke joint, house rent party crowd? Not many, if any. So the 45 copy of this is very rare, yes it's damaged, but whose got one, excepting dedicated long time collectors who were buying back in the 70s and 80s?  

To summarize, yes it's damaged, but what would a M- copy go for, and how many years until it's offered? Where could you find one? .How long would it take? What would you have to pay for a M- copy?
These are the sorts of questions the serious blues 45 collector will have to ponder over while deciding what amount to bid for this 45.

If you will please listen to the clips and turn your player volume all the way up at the bottom right of the mic box, you'll hear a 45 that looks nasty on its edge, but plays far better through the brief heat damage than the visual would indicate. This computer records only 60 seconds at a time, so you may hear a jump in the music, but this record does not skip.
